I am so confused the ends of my hair are always super defined and coily but the roots are usually frizzy and not defined at all. I would say there is no curl pattern there except the curliness on the ends have to be coming from somewhere. :perplexed
Also the curls in my hair lose shape very easily I could pull on a chunk of curl for a few seconds and the section would look like a light blow out.

 My hair is just like this! There are some parts that are defined all the way up, but for the most part, I have little/no definition after the first few inches. Also, when I braid it, and then comb the braids out, I look like I just blow-dryed my hair.

My hair is similar to what you described. The curls clump together better towards the ends on certain sections of my hair, also with little manipulation, the hair around my temples and nape can lose curl definition easily. It looks frizzy/straight.

My hair is just like this!! I did a mild texturizer on my roots in June, and that helped my curl definition at the roots A Lot. I also put my product on my roots to keep my curls clumped, and defined. A lot of it was also finding the right products that keep my hair moist and curly, instead of dry and frizzy. I follow the Curly Girl method as well.

I also can't do a twist-out, braid-out to save my life....they always end up looking like I did them on relaxed hair... :nono:

Yay I am not alone! Thanks for the replies! Its so frustrating because even when I do roller sets the ends keep the curl while the rest kinda poof up MrsJaiDiva what kind of products did you begin to use?

My hair gets like that when I need a protein boost. I'm assuming you're natural. Is your hair fine? If so, you might need more protein in your regimen than other naturals. If your hair is frizzy, but not dry, I would almost definitely believe it has to do with not enough protein. Protein assists with curl formation and "bounce back". I have fine, kinky hair, and my hair behaves so much better when I use combinations of keratin, silk amino acids, and collagen protein as a regular part of my regimen.

Also, some styling products just work better than others. I'm partial to creamy styling products, but sprays work well to enhance curl pattern without disturbing it. Also, I'm not a huge fan of gel unless I'm trying to slick my hair down, but Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic works wonders for me. Even if my hair has started to frizz, I dollop of this stuff and frizz is gone.

If I'm going to do a WNG, I don't comb or rake through my hair after I'm out of the shower. Doing than just gives me a big frizzball on top of my hair. First I either spray or smooth my LI into dripping wet hair, then use a microfiber towel to GENTLY wrap my hair for about 3-5 minutes, so my hair is still damp. I don't squeeze the towel or anything. Afterwards, I "scrunch" products in a DOWNWARD motion throughout sections of my hair. Then I don't touch it until it's dry. Once it's dry I carefully fluff it out with my hands.

nadaa16 The first thing I did was to cut out shampoo. I use co-cleansers like Wen, Devā-Curl No Poo, or HQS Coco-Lime. I also wash, and apply product in sections....I do 4 sections. After I co-cleanse, I oil rinse and then condition with Tresseme Naturals moisture condish. When I apply the Tresseme Naturals, I don't rinse it out. If I'm straight out the door, I apply AG re:Coil Curl Activator to my soaking wet hair 2-3 pumps per section, shake, and go. If I have time, I wait till my hair has air dried a bit....then I apply my gel (2:1 mixture of Eco Styler Crystal & World of Curls Activator Gel) to each section, and blow only my roots dry. I then shake, and done. At night, I spray my hair with my spray bottle mixture and apply some moisturizer to my nape and front, and then pineapple with my Buff Headgear or LocSoc. My curls last 2-3 days.

^^Mine was too. I was ignoring really getting my DC and regular condish at the roots. I know a lot of folks only use it on the ends for various reasons (itchies, etc), but if I don't I have a clumped and dry undefined pile at the roots and the rest stays soft and more moisturized. Same with styling and M&S products.

@nadaa16, I might be the odd one out but I don't think what you describe is hair that has anything wrong with it or that needs anything to fix it. That's kinda what 4B hair is like. The coils are so tiny that the hairs cannot cup each other to form definition from roots to ends. The ends may cup each other though coz they are "open". The tiny coils are why SHINGLING is usually the one way 4Bers can get definition.

The base of my hair just looks like a cloud or what some may call frizzy. The ends though show the pattern:

Here's my hair after I went to bed with it loose (a crime in my world!) and so had to detangle. You can see coils at the ends but the base there's no definition:

Here's my hair when I was finger detangling it with conditioner (again, coils visible on ends but not at the base):

My hair when rinsed and fully detangled/fingercombed, same thing--coils on ends, no definition in base:

Here's my hair after being combed with a fine tooth comb. The ends still show circular shapes but the base looks like a cloud:

The only time you can see definition all the way to the base is if I pull out a few strands and separate them from the rest. Away from the rest, there's no squashing and flattening of the coils due to being cramped and crammed together and so the strands can take their natural shape as they do at ends where they have more room:

Woo Hoo! I'm not the only one, although I am starting to figure I'm a 4b, except...I still have curly hair, so I'm not sure, I gave up on typing this past year, but the frizz is still killing me.

Thank you all. I will try to make sure to pay attention to how I apply my conditioners. I have stopped shampooing using terressentials or con argan oil
Nonie. I may be 4b but idk because my hair is just crazy in terms of textures

Your hair doesn't necessarily have to be 4b to do this, I don't think that is what Nonie is saying. It's also the element of high shrinkage that takes your hair to this place; and general kinkiness. So you can be a 3c or a 4a and still only have clumping at the ends. It's nothing wrong with your hair or conditioning practices. In fact, that your hair is accepting moisture and clumping at the ends shows your ends are well taken care of.

Yes, this isn't just a type 4 thing, because I'm very much a type 3. I'm a coarse 3 though, and while the hair in the middle to back clumps from root to tip, the hair in the front does not. And it won't even if I pull on it like Nonie does...it just goes straight-ish. Applying product from root to tip on wet/damp hair locks the curls in place. And as it was said above, dry hair doesn't clump so keep your moisture high.

Terri at tightlycurly.com has great tutorials on how to get hair to clump from root to tip. It's in the rules section I believe. She spent years trying to crack the code on her type 3/4 curls that just wouldn't seem to clump
