Intro (long) plus detangling/moisturizing recs?

Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself--I've been lurking for a while now, and have learned so much from the knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful women on this board.

I have been trying to grow my hair longer for about 8 months now, and I believe I've established some pretty good habits: frequent washing, protecting my hair throughout the day and at bedtime, and eliminating all heat but my hooded dryer.

I can *finally* tell that my hair is responding and starting to become more healthy and long! However, I am lost when it comes to products for my hair--so many misses and so few hits. I REALLY need to find something that will help detangle and moisturize my hair post wash+condition during my combout. I swear I hold my breath when combing out my wet hair b/c it is sometimes I have no problem getting my comb through it, and at other times, I can hear my hair crying for mercy!

Here's a little more information: I'm not 100% sure of my hair type, but stylists always call it *wavy* when they first examine it, and not a one has used oil in my hair (aside from oil sheen) b/c they say it will weigh it down. I'd say it's about 3 inches from bra-strap length. I have fine hair that looks thicker than it is b/c it's dense. When I saw Tracy's pic up last month as the feature, I rejoiced at finally seeing a hair twin (just with a different haircolor!) Currently I am rotating LeKair Cholesterol and Mizani Moisturefuse for deep conditioners, and use Joico Integrity for a leave-in, and Fantasia IC Moisturizer with Aloe for a moisturizer (though I'm not really sold on this yet).

Any recs for a good detangler and/or moisturizer; I'd love something with a good "slip" to it! Please? /images/graemlins/smile.gif Wash day is coming up and I've got $$ burning a hole in my pocket. Thanks in advance!

Hi MelangeK,
Welcome to the board. I'm no expert on hair care products. I think some of the other women on the board will be able to recommend some good products for you. The one piece of advice I can give you is that with your length hair, you should wash it in the shower. Let the water run through your hair so that it's flat and straight behind you. Work the conditioner into your hair by massaging it from the top front of your hair to the ends. Don't bunch it up on your head, always work it downwards with your hair straight, then rinse. Don't ever rub the hair too figorously when wet. When you go to untangle your hair, start at the ends first and work your way upwards to the top. No matter what conditioner you use, this should make it easier to manage your wet hair. I used to get a lot of tangles because I would wash my hair in the sink, then when I get up, I have to make that wet hair go in the other direction and I would lose a lot of hair, etc...you know the drill. This has worked well for me. I only wash and condition in the shower, not in the sink with my head turned upside down. I don't get anymore breakage when washing my hair. If you already do this, I appologize for the explanation. If not, I hope it helped.

Sorry for rambling.

Have a blessed day!!

You know, Pebbles, you make an excellent point and got me thinking. I always wash my hair in the shower, using the technique you described; however, it seems like 50% of the time, I rinse my deep conditioner out in the sink, leaning over forwards, and wonder of all wonders (poking fun at myself), I get tangles in my hair that will not quit!! I guess I get lazy and don't want to get back in the shower, after all the time I spend in there 1st go round! I don't have this problem *nearly* as bad rinsing in the sink if I have my bf help me as I lean over with my back to the sink.

Sometimes, it's those common sense things I don't think of /images/graemlins/blush.gif. All though my hair still gets tangle-y when I rinse it out in the shower, I now have a reminder to not make matters worse by rinsing in the sink. Thanks, Pebbles!

PS--$$ still burning a hole in my pocket to resolve my detangling / moisturizing needs. Any recs? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hello MelangeK, I currently use Elucence moisture Balancing Shampoo and conditioner but you have to order that online( you receive in 3 days). It has lots of nautral ingredients and does wonders for detangling. Joico Integrity is a good choice for a leave-in (I use this also). The wed address for the elucence is pleasantimage.com.

I also use Keracare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and Keracare Humecto Conditioner. This is also a great product for moisturizing and detangling. You can purchase this at salons. JC Penney usually carries it also. Hope you find something that you really like. Welcome to the board! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Welcome, MelangeK. I have a few recommendations for detangling and moisturizing conditioners.
[*]Kiehl's Extra Strength Conditioning Rinse with Added Coconut. I started mixing this with my Nexxus Humectress and sitting under the dryer, and I love the result. Leaves my hair incredibly soft. [*]Motions Moisture Plus Conditioner. This one contains silicones, which some ladies here like and others don't. But it provides great 'slip', and my comb glides through my wet hair. [*]Paul Mitchell Super Charged Moisturizer. I sometimes use another moisturizer after this; very good moisturizer but I need a little extra something to make the hair feel smooth. [/list] I hope this helps, and welcome again! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Intro (long) plus detangling/moisturizing recs

Id say for me it is the Creme of nature detangling shampoo that really works for moisturizing i use lekairs cholestral or ORS hair mayo.

Ofcourse since im a PJ i also love motions lavish shampoo and keracare humecto.

Be blessed /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Welcome Melangek! This is what works for me... no matter which conditioner I use...if I really coat my hair with 'gobs' of it...let it set while I shower or towel myself off(putting a plastic cap over my hair)..then comb with a wide tooth comb BEFORE I rinse. The conditioner helps the comb 'glide' through my hair. I then carefully rinse trying to keep my hair straight. I never ring my hair out or towel dry. I simply wrap the towel aound my hair and let it soak up the excess water. I hope this helps.

Girl, I always stay in my robe after washing my hair. I do my conditioner or treatments and when I'm done, I jump back in the shower. It's a pain, but since it has greatly stopped breakage, I do it. I wash my hair every three days. On those days I get up at 5 am to be able to do this, like this morning! /images/graemlins/crazy.gif The things a girl has to do for the love of her hair....

I forgot..when I rinse, I rinse in the sink with distilled water and just pour it over my hair. I don't get back in the shower. Also to save time, I've been shampooing or rinsing at night... except on Saturday(today). I do a rollerset then. This is also my routine for the winter....no cold wet hair for me. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hey twin... /images/graemlins/wink.gif

One thing I noticed in your post was that you have trouble combing after your rinse out of the conditioner. Leave ins are great at this point in the process. From one fine-hair to another, I NEVER pull a comb through my wet hair without some kind of conditioner in it. Here's what I do: 1) Wash in the shower (always) using the method our lovely pebbles suggested. 2) After my deep conditioner I do get back in the shower to rinse. But before just allowing the water to run through my hair, I massage my scalp a bit, get a VERY wide toothed comb and comb my hair under the stream of the shower's running water. That way I begin the detangling process early. 3) Once I'm all rinsed out and I'm ready to style I apply my favorite leave in - Fantasia IC Leave in Hair and Scalp Treatment - and go through with the wide tooth comb again. Then I follow with a rat tail - but the sturdy ones where the teeth are still pretty well spaced? THEN and ONLY THEN do I consider myself detangled. /images/graemlins/grin.gif
These methods shoud help - along with the Fantasia. Some conditioners I like that have a nice slip are: Infusium Power Pac Conditioner, Feria Color Moisturizing Conditioner (it's billed for colored hair but this is one of the ONLY conditioners that I was able to comb my hair when wet MINUS my leave in. The "slip" stays in the hair even after you rinse it out) and Pantene DAily Moisture Renewa; DOnitioner. I find generally products with silicone or silicone derivatives work exceptionally well on my hair. I never have a problem with build up or anything.

Good luck chica! And welcome - twin! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well aren't you a darling!!! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi! I'm sooo glad you posted about the detangling question as, being a hair twin too (winking at Tracy too), I look for really good 'slip' products.

I always used to wash my hair upside down, tipping my head forward into the bath but now I'm going to do it the right way (so common sensical!! doh) and wash with the water running in the direction of hair growth: Down.

For me, conditioner wise I love Motions Moisture Plus for slip. It has silicones which my hair like Tracy's, really loves. Plus its a cheap conditioner so its easy to trial. I've recce'd it to others with hair similar to mine who have stuck with using it now as part of their hair routine. I just got the IC Fantastia hair and scalp leave in treatment and this also detangles on wet hair really well. I'd def. rec this.

I had the Feria Colour Moisturising Conditioner tried on me once and was VERY VERY impressed. So much so that I think I'm going to get it. It did leave my hair detangled.

The shower washing tip is a biggie though.

Good luck from a fellow 'slip' PJ fan /images/graemlins/wink.gif

MelangeK,

Everyone has already given you great advice, but I wanted to add something about rinsing out in the sink.
I wash, condition, and rinse in the sink, but after the final rinse, I tilt my head and run the water over my hair and smooth it back with my hands so that my hair is going in the right direction.
It is hard to explain, but it gives me the same results as rinsing in the shower.

Wow! Look what happens when I'm (involuntarily) away from my computer for the weekend--I surely didn't expect so many respnse to my request for help...thank you all! Your recommendations were all so wonderful, and I can't wait to put them into use. Special thanks to my hair twins (Tracy and BRH too) for your product suggestions...it's great to have a frame of reference and I learned some info about the silicone thang.

I have a list right in front of me of product suggestions that I'm taking to the beauty supply store in a little while here.

I especially appreciate the hints on the techniques I should use in addition to products...I know that handling my hair PROPERLY is just as important as using the right products.

I'll report back once I try some of these suggestions. Thanks for the warm welcome to the board! /images/graemlins/smile.gif
