Hey look at what I found in Little India today! I know everyone's been talking about Amla Oil so I thought I'd try my local Indian community for you guessed it...more hair products.;)

I wanted to try Alma oil too but the one at my local Indian Supermarket had Mineral oil in it. I am still searching for a product with pure oils like Dabur Vatika.

Wow!!! That's quite a stash. I've been trying to get to Little India for months. I might finally try to get down there this weekend!

Gurl!! You might see me there if it's not raining!! We're supposed to be having a major storm pass through starting tomorrow through Sunday though...:ohwell:

Okay now VW! We might have to set up a road trip!!! Not that I don't have a million and one products and more on the way, but I LOVE oils and can't find a good reason to pass up more at those prices!!

Sounds like a plan!! Maybe if we can hook up over the next week or two I can give you the products I was going to take to the Get Together on the 22nd of April, I can't go cause a friend just decided she's getting married on that friggin' day. :(

I only want to try one or two of the other oils, I really want to stock up on the ones I know I like! They can be hard to find down here sometimes.

NY ladies where can I find an indian store that sells Dabur Alma oil, Dabur Vatika coconut oil and Dabur Jasmin hair oil? I would love to know before I order online again. My bottle of Alma oil is almost gone because the bottle fell while I was using it.:perplexed  :(

Thanks

these are on my to buy list.

Which one of these oils are supposed to provide the most benefits? I am checking out the amla oil, but don't know whichone I should try first.

:notworthy: You found the Navratha?!?! I have been looking for that one for a minute. You are gonna make me put my little green bug on the road!!

After you ladies raved about the Amla oil I started looking into others ones as well. I bought the Navratha and I really like it. You can really feel it stimulating your scalp, so I think I will use this one as a pre-poo for my cw and the amla for the regular washes.

:wallbash: Trying to fight the urge to drive to my local Indian stores in hopes of finding some....

Luckily the gym is calling louder than my pj-ism...

Long sigh.....

So, I went on down to Artesia today and hit Little India...hard.

The prices make it sooooo easy to just buy whatever. I got all of the oils purchased by Ctcks PLUS...

Ancient Formula Coconut Perfumed Hair Oil $3.99 for 7 oz. (Smells like Dial or Caress. Decidely soapy, slightly floral in scent.)
Emami Amla Plus $2.99 for 6.76 oz. (Not bad-smelling...a plaintive soapy scent. Not offensive, but hopefully not lasting.)
Dabur Vatika (with free Vatika soap) $3.99 for 300ml. (Has the scent of virgin coconute Oil.)
Kesavardhini Concentrate Hair Oil $2.99 for 25ml. (I love the smell...reminds me of Celestial Seasonings Lemon Zinger or Pledge!)
Ramtirth Special No. 1 Brahmi Oil $3.99 for 200 ml.(Smells like Blue Cheese dressing...or Ranch. Or maybe the fat and sauce left behind from a steak dinner along with some onion bits! Woah!)
Parachute Sampoorna "Coconut Oil with Almonds and Hibiscus" $2.99 for 150 ml.(Smells like what it is...basically more coconut oil!)
Dabur Jasmine Hair Oil $2.99 for 6.76 oz. (Run of the mill old lady floral scent. I don't hate it!)

For the record, the Meera Herbal Hair Oil smells almost EXACTLY like Wild Growth Oil.

Okay, I need a life. I dragged my daughters down to piss my cash off on these oils, now I'm typing scent reviews @ near midnight! And I'm enjoying it! I need a life. . . .

Dabur Amla Hair Oil with mineral oil is the bomb. I apply DAHO once a week as a pre-shampoo treatment and my ends come out really soft and smooth. I can't recommend it enough.

I've been rethinking mineral oil's bad reputation. Perhaps it loses effectiveness or becomes damaging if overused like in daily applications or letting it build up by not washing hair often enough.

Now petroleum (or petrolatum) on the other hand has got to be the worst.substance.ever.

You can get 100% pure oils at the Indian stores at good prices too. I bought a huge jar of coconut oil for about €2 the other day. I also buy castor oil and sweet almond oil there too. I've seen pure sesame and jasmine oils but have never tried them.

Quick question: how exactly do you use these oils? Do you do a hot oil type treatment before a wash? Or do you use them as a leave in? I remember seeing the Alma oil at my local health food store.
TIA:)

IMO, amla oil (the Dabur brand w/mineral oil) smells too unpleasant to use as a leave-in. I use it unheated as a pre-poo treatement and get great results. HTH.

When I went to the Indian Sore yesterday, the cashier told me that there is a HUGE market for India Based products (they have a large Indian community), that a lot of the products are distributed from there once they are imported to the states.

On my bottle of Sampoorna Oil, there's a label affixed which rease: Imported & Distributed by: Amtrade Inc. New York, NY 10016. Tel: (212) 725-0679. It looks like Amtrade are distributors of many different products not just India hair goods.

But, I did a search in New York in Google, I found an India Bazaar. There's not much information, just an addy and phone number, ya'll have to take it from there. Perhaps ifyou call, you can see where you can find these products or if there is a 'community' where you can go and find many different stores.

Good Luck!

I love love love the Dabur Vatika Hair Oil.
I love to heat this up and soak it into my hair for hours.
I also use the Hair Revitalizer. This stuff is a little hard to find.

Just a couple of hours. I apply it all over my hair, pour some into a baggy and put my ponytail in it then cover my head with a shower cap.

VWVixxen:

I'm sorry girl. I know you were concerned about the weather and getting to the gym. I was trying to get both of my sisters to go but one had dance classes....the other had a film shoot. I finally said fug it and hopped in the car with the kiddies, my mapquest directions, and my list. I hit all three of the Cash and Carry stores. Please make a good notation!!

Doesn't that Brahmi oil smell like some kind of weird cheesy, mustardy marinade What on earth?????

Y'all came up!!!!! :) There's a lot of good information that's posted here. Good products, and inexpensive too. :) Right up my alley.
I have the Dabur Amla oil, and I love the results, except for the smell. Hey, suffer for beauty.
I'll have to make a run, and see what's down there. I was trying sooooo hard not to be a PJ. Why did I open this one up? Sigh.

Go on Teacake!!

It's pjism you can feel fiscally responsible about! You can come up on 3 - 4 oils for 10 bucks!!!

I agree. I can't stand the smell.

Has anyone used the Ancient formula Castor Herbal hair oil? I just bought this tonight along with some other indian oils and it's some good stuff:love: . Nice, rich and thick.

Here is what it says on the box:

Regular use may have the following action:

Ancient Formulae Castor Herbal hair oil is a blend of refined vegetable oil and castor oil which nourishes your scalp and strengthens the roots of your hair, giving you thicker, darker and denser hair growth. It rejuvenates the hair. Regular massaging keeps mind cool and fresh.

The color of this oil is red. The smell is a bit overpowering but I don't mind it.
