I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

I don't know if you all remember my experience with this one particular beauty supply store that I won't mention the name of (Beauty Island on Lochraven and Taylor ave in Baltimore, MD) .... where the clerk there repeatedly accused me of wearing tracks and insisted that my hair wasn't my own?? Remember, I said she'd actually put her fingers through my hair to check for tracks???

I was so angry. But mind you, this place is so convenient and close by

Well, today I went in, and I saw this very cute short wig! Knowing now that I will probably never cut my hair again, I wanted to try on the wig to see how it would look. And it mighta gave me some styling versatility. So I asked the lady (different one) to try the wig on. She handed me a stocking cap and said "You wear ponytail?" and I said "yes" thinking that she was asking me if that's the style my hair was in, which it was

and then she said "Take it off to try wig on" ....

**my thoughts** : Uh...take it off??? WTF!?!
So I say "What do you mean? This is my hair"... then she laughed and said "Oh, ok"

People, my hair is by no means unbeweavably long, so why do these people at this one particular shop that I won't mention the name of (BEAUTY ISLAND!!!!!) convinced that I have fake hair????

BTW I did take some updated hair pics on Thanksgiving, I just haven't finished that roll of film yet. As soon as I do, I'm going to create a new album.

Are these women AA or Asian?

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

Girl, I have no idea! Same thing happened to me in the bss and from a girl I know. I hate when people put their hands in my head without permission especially strangers. I can't believe it was a different lady this time. I think they are probably use to black females coming in and buying weaves but that is still no reason to assume.

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

Caramela,
Could it be that your hair looks so incredibly healthy and even that it's mistaken for being fake? (From what I've seen of your hair, I'd say YES!) If it's not incredibly long, maybe that's it. I know that I take notice of a healthy head of hair long, medium length, or short!
It is annoying that they don't "believe" you though.

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

The first lady was Korean; the second African.

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

I would take it as a compliment. It just means your hair is looking good.Annnoying but still a compliment

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

What a brat!

Don't talk to her when you go in. Just be self important or talk on your cell phone or listen to your mp3/cd player or look snobbish. When you do address her, don't bother making eye contact. Look up and to the right. If you seem unapproachable and act aloof, she'll buzz off.

Better yet, just quit patronizing her business altogether.

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

It doesn't say a whole lot about that salon if they are not use to seeing a black female with long healthy hair.

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

hey caramela I didnt know you were located in Baltimore I went to Morgan and then I got sick and had to go home.... I think i knowthe location of that place but im not quite sure

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

Girl, they are just haters! Even though there comments were annoying and ignorant to the fact that AA can have healthy hair, just take them as compliments that you have beautiful healthy hair (that they probably want for themselves)!

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

it doesn't surprise me at all, and i agree that they think that because of your hair's health moreso than the length. i think that's what sets the women here apart from most people... because we all believe "what's the point of long hair if it isn't healthy?"

so just take it as an uninformed, don't know no bette compliment!!

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

well, maybe they're just not used to seeing people with very much hair asking to try on wigs...i dunno. <shrugs>

I agree.

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

People are always going to assume that AAs with long, thick and healthy hair HAVE to be sporting a weave. Face it, some of us have been guilty of that on this board. I'd just take their ignorance as a compliment and KIM (keep it moving).

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

Caramela,
I didn't know you were a B-more girl! I know the store you're talking about. I'm sorry you've had these expereinces, but I really think most Asians are taught by the media in their countries that all blacks have short, nappy hair and that lengths can only be achieved by purchasing fake hair. I guess we (the LHCF ladies) will have to reeducate them!!!! I go the the Beauty Island in Owings Mills, as it is closer to where I live, and it is run by Asians. They have never commented to me, but I've had my hair in a bun or under a hat every time I go in. Imma try to go in there with my flat ironed hair ( 1 1/2 inches from bra strap) and see what they say. I'll keep ya posted.

Re: I\'m really going to stop going to that place!

hair def doesnt need to be long to look good, i remember when i had only shoulder length hair, relaxed. and i was consitently getting the "wow you have good hair" "is that your real hair" "i wish i had your type of hair" remarks from everyone including total strangers. to me it was a little weird, because my hair isnt any more different than their (well maybe healthier
wink.gif
), yet they would do anything to believe otherwise
