I\'m new to all of this

Hi, I'm just starting out, I have a bob that comes to my chin. I see a lot of products and supplements mentioned here, how should I start out? What are the basics?

Re: I\'m new to all of this

Hi Lulu~
Welcome. I wish there was one product recommendation that worked for everyone across the board. If there is, we haven't found it yet!

You'll have to experiment to find out what feels best for your hair.

To get you started, I'll tell you what MY hair likes:
(These are all inexpensive products):
<ul type="square"> [*]Moisture, moisture and more moisture! I love the effects of distilled water. Washing my hair at least once a week also puts moisture back into my hair. I still rinse my hair almost daily. Until recently, my hair also really loved curl activator (yes, as in jherri curls). My hair is relaxed.

[*]Conditioner ~ inexpensive ones I've liked are in the Clairol Herbal Essences' Fruit Fusions line. More expensive ones are Aubrey Organics' GPB conditioner, L'Oreal Feria's Color Conditioning Treatment, and L'Oreal Kerastase Masquintense.

[*]Oils ~ These keep my hair pliable and shiny. They also help seal in that all-important moisture. Many here use olive oil as a pre-shampoo warm (not hot) oil treatment or post-wash. I am still in love with castor oil - it makes my hair so shiny! I also like Wildgrowth Hair Oil, which you can buy at Sally's Beauty Supply. These are heavy oils. Jojoba is a lighter oil but also tends to be more expensive. There are so many oils, you should experiment. Here's a great breakdown (this is a link to Jade 21's diary; she's a member of LHCF with butt-length hair): Various Oils.

[*]Protective styles ~ There are many. Some folks wear braids (cornrows, extensions, french braids); others wear buns (which can also be braided); others wear weaves, the list goes on but it's whatever style keeps your ends from being exposed to the air. I usually wear my hair up in a bun. It serves a few basic purposes for me: One, this keeps me from messing with it constantly. I learned from the long haired ladies on the boards (and there are many!) that less manipulation = less breakage = more retained, visible length. It works! Two, it helps me stretch out my touchup times, which has also been great for my seeing visible length. [/list]

As for supplements, I'm a bit leery recommending them b/c not everyone can tolerate them. There's a recent thread on this Board about someone who landed in the ER. But, if your physician clears you for these, I've found the following to be immensely helpful: B-complex vitamin (includes biotin, to help boost growth rate; pantothenic acid, to increase thickness; and a host of other goodies!

); MSM (methylsufonylmethane, a naturall-occurring organic sulphur compound); and an essential fatty acid like Evening Primrose Oil or Flax Seed Oil. And lots of protein (I'm a big red meat and fish eater) helps too. But you may be iron-deficient or have some other areas that will be more beneficial to you, so again, check with your doctor to see what, if anything, you need. Oh! Don't forget to drink lots of water!

I'm sure the other LHCF members here will be more than willing to also share their tips to get you started!

Good luck and happy hair growing!

Re: I\'m new to all of this

Hi, to all...and thanks for all the welcomes.

My hair care routine? Ha, I wash it once a week, every other week I use keraphix, I relax every 6 weeks(probably too often but my hair grows fast). May hair is pretty healthy, I just want to increase the length. After reading some, I went out today and bought a "hair, skin, and nails" vitamin with:

Biotin 1.875 mg
MSM 750mg
Gelatin 450 mg
Organic Sulfur 310 mg
Silica 20mcg

among other things, and I also bought a separate Biotin Supplement.

How much Biotin should I be taking daily?
