I'm going to be moving from DC to Houston soon and I need some help!

Houston naturals:
What do your regimens look like (including products, if possible, please!)?
How is the humidity? Do you use humectants?
What styles do you wear that will last in the weather?
Do you ever straighten? If you do straighten, how do you get it to last?
Are there any black-owned BSS in Houston?

(Please include whether or not you have fine and/or porous hair in your regi! And pictures are always welcome!)

I'm super excited about the move and want to make sure I stay on top of my hair progress!

Lol. I'm going back to grad school. And I've been wanting to go down there for a while now! It's time for a change. Now you have to come back to LUSH so you can see me before I leave! :)

Houston naturals:
What do your regimens look like? MOISTURE every other day with my moisture mix water a few drops of lavendar oil a cap of evoo and vo5 free me freesia or any cheapie conditioner
I shampoo 1 or 2x a week in summer cowashing is good if you workout or are out in the day time
I use glycerin in summer
I usually seal with shea butter or evoo
How is the humidity? It often feels humid but lately in my area we've had dry heat ew I almost forgot get a satin scarf because even indoors it gets muggy sometimes. 1 st year my hair was sooooo dry
Do you use humectants? Sometimes I use b5
What styles do you wear that will last in the weather? 2 strand twists, braids, braidouts with gel. My twistouts just fro up so I wouldn't suggest those, bantu knots etc
Do you ever straighten? I straighten in winter which for us is what most people consider fall otherwise its summer the other seaons. If you do straighten, how do you get it to last? I use a heat protectant and a conditioner that is not water based or a lotion like
whipped shea butter or ORS Lotion
Are there any black-owned BSS in Houston? Um Uncle Funky's Daughter is black owned and they even sale qhemetbiologics so it's good to be able to get that on the ground if
need be
Also there's a few beauty salons like Zayd's Natural Haircare Salon

How is the humidity? Do you use humectants? Cowash almost every day in summer. Humectants work great because we have high humidity. I use Shea Moisture products mostly.

What styles do you wear that will last in the weather? WNG's and twist out's

Do you ever straighten? If you do straighten, how do you get it to last? Girl...the humidity here is something else. I straightened in May and I wont be bothered to do it again until Dec. It lasted maybe 6 days. I just pin curl at night.

Are there any black-owned BSS in Houston? - not sure, if anyone knows of one let me know!

I'm protective styling right now, because it summer. (braids) My regimen is simple. Wash (SheaMoisture Retention), Leave-in (S-curl), Seal (Jojoba oil), Oil my scalp (with my oil mix), take a 2 hair vitamins and multi a day, and deepppp condition when I take out these braids. I will get my sew-in soon and use the same regimen.

It super spicy hot down here, so the humidity is at an all time high.

I am natural, so it rare that I straightening my hair.

Barely any black own Bss in houston. I know 3 African Bss stores. We do have Uncle Funky Daughter, Target sells a lot of natural hair products, Whole Foods has a bunch of stuff too,"some" Wal-marts are stepping up there game by having more hair products for AA hair, and there are a bunch of stores that have good products too.

I just found a black owned BSS on S. Main called Sisters Couture Beauty Supply. I'll check it out later today or tomorrow.

I'll see when I can get down there! When are u expecting to leave? Congrats on grad school tho!

OOh congrats, but for some reason, I already thought you lived here. I hope you have a safe, successful move. You'll love it here, but be warned, it's hot hot and hot here, I'm sure you already know.

Well, here are as much as I can answer:

I am a complete DIYer. There are a couple of B.O. BSSes and Salons. There's one on S. Gessner called Brashae's. It's fairly new, I've been a couple of times and they had the stuff I was looking for. I only buy tools/hair from BSSes. As far as moisturizers/shampoos, I stick to Whole Foods or Walmart.

I bun a lot but I try to do cute styles with parts and doing a low side bun. I do twistouts and my natural styles withstand the humidity. I wash every Thursday and style for the weekend/week.
Humidity is REAL here, so straightening hair is something I only do rarely and wear during the day when it's not so humid.

Don't be worried much about completely switching up your regimen here, you'll be fine. I think as long as you moisturized and protective style, you're good.

Thank you so much for all the welcomes and responses! I knew I could count on you guys!
For those of you who wear twist-outs and other "out" styles, which products do you use? I used IC gel here for a WNG one day and the humidity made my hair swell up like crazy. I'm assuming it's because the IC gel has glycerin. Great for moisture - not so much for definition. What do you all use?

kupenda: I am probably going to leave late July/early August!
bronzebomb: Thanks so much, soror! I can't wait to move!
Kneechay: Nope! I am a DMV girl. And the weather is one of the top 5 reasons I picked the city! Lol. I am SO ready to be warm almost year round. I'm anemic so that will suit me well!
tropical-punch: I'll be at the University of Houston-Clear Lake studying literature. I haven't found a job yet but I am currently working at LUSH and will transfer to one in Houston at the end of the summer.
EbonyCPrincess: Thanks so much for the heads up. I will check her out!

for me the only gel that doesn't make my out styles swell is LA Looks Sport Gel in Blue color but be warned it is sticky before it drys kinda like eco styler but it clumps and holds way better for me

silenttullip: Thanks so much! I will have to look into that. Although I hated ecostyler in my hair.... hmmm...
I was thinking of using Aussie Moist as my styler but I guess that's out of the question. Lol.

Moving to H-town huh? I was out there for 6 years then moved somewhere that I could accepted into nursing school IMMEDIATELY lol but I will be back. Girl let me tell you.....from May till Sept/October its hot as hell and I used glycerine and water products and did protective styles. I was on the southwest and most of the BSS were asian of course but one on Gessner and Braeswood is owned by Africans but not sure you would want to go over there. I never straightened while I was in Houston but I did a blowout in February when it was cold. But from about Mar/April till Oct/November it will be hot and u want to use those products that combat that humidity and bring moisture in. Good luck on your move, hope you find much success out there.

Hey, well good luck

There's a thread in OT for Houston. I can't remember the OP's moniker, though...but it's a great thread. I need to ask some more questions myself.
Thanks. I will look for it.

I was planning on PS'ing until the end of the year, but now I don't know because I'm not tryna be hot with wigs or weaves or anything like that. I may rock some faux buns or whatnot but I am definitely removing these twists before I go. So if I decide to stop PS'ing, the plan was to redo my regimen Curly Nikki style - mainly braid & curls (instead of her usual twist & curls) and maybe a few WNGs if I could find a product that wouldn't cause my hair to swell too much since that shrinkage = SSKs for me. Since my hair is so fine, I am going to have to wait for a lot of length to not have an anorexic bun so that isn't much of an option.
But I can figure out the styles. That's not a biggy - they'll either work or they won't.
I am more concerned with what products everyone is using to stay moisturized while still combatting the effects of humidity.
