Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
This makes me reconsider my idea of becoming a texturized lady. Oh Lord, so confusing...
But you know what. It's always nice to come to a realization. Especially one like this, where you have been harming yourself (in this case your hair). Some people just can't take certain things, and some can. We all have to find that one thing... or the happy medium that lets us know that we've found what WE like... not what others have tried and liked. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for sharing. It's great that now you have come to a place where you understand your hair better, AND appreciate it more. I hope that your hair grows and thrives and truly becomes your crowning glory!
I guess the bottom line is the grass isn't always greener on the other side! But sometimes we have to be over there mowing for a while until we figure that out

Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
Sounds like my life story. I went through the same thing a few years ago except that i was fully relaxed not texturized. I appreciate my natural hair so much more now than i did back then.
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
I think I needed this, after seeing those Curve salon pics /images/graemlins/love.gif. But, I guess I gotta keep doin' what I'm doin'. Thanks /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
Thanks for sharing! I've been down the same road too - the first 2 times I grew out my natural hair I ended up texturizing. Now I'm natural again and though I love my hair I can't lie and say that sometimes texturizing again doesn't cross my mind (usually on those frustrating bad hair days). But I'm determined to break the cycle and not texturize and just continue to utilize the various options that natural hair has to offer. Now when I get frustrated I'll twist or braid my hair up and leave it alone for a while - and usually the frustration passes. I'm determined not to give in this time!
Also think of it this way, as the saying goes you never miss a good thing until it's gone - so maybe if you hadn't texturized you would have never realized how much you really love and appreciate your natural hair. Everyone's journey is different /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Then I texturized, and I ran into hair problems that I'd never had before: knots, tangles, various textures, more breakage (when natural, I loss hardly any hair when combing. The only breakage I had was from combing too much and using too much heat).

Thank you for posting this I was beginning to think I was alone! Though I have never texturized when I was relaxed I forever had tangles and knots to fight with. My natural hair never has any of these problems and is so much stronger now that I know the right products to use.
Good luck in continuing your transition sometimes its good to have experienced both sides so that you can truely appreciate what you do have.
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
I'm glad that you posted this too, Brownie. Although it was hard to style my natural hair, it was healthier and my hairtype was consistent- 3c was 3c and 4a was 4a. No straight hair or having to worry about overprocessing. I've thought about cutting my hair so I can get rid of the chemically treated hair, but I'm so close to bra strap! I'll just continue taking good care of my hair. I actually love the feel of my new growth. The curl pattern is much tighter, but it's shinier and very soft.

I agree. Everybody in my family is totally against chemicals because they say relaxers make your hair fall out. Well, that's not always true because I learned how to grow my hair in its texturized state and my hair grew to a nice length.
But like I said before, it didn't work for me because my texturized hair had more problems with breakage, dryness, tangles and knots. THen I had to worry about underprocessing, overprocessing, hair dressers who complained about my hair being too thick...etc...etc..It was all just too much of a hassle /images/graemlins/whip.gif. I'm looking forward to applying the things I learned on this board to my natural hair and hopefully it will thrive.
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
WOW, this is exactly ow i feel now- I am transitionning from a relaxer as opposed to a texturizer- I was natural for five years and relaxed on the fifth year after many bad hair days... now I can't wait for my natural hair to grow again- I'm going to enjoy it so much. I'm even getting impatient...

Yep being natural is not that hard to do-you just gotta change your way of thinking and know that your hair is beautiful REGARDLESS of the texture.
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
I'm glad you posted this. I too am growing out my texturizer. I miss my natural hair so much. I wish I could have waited and passed the frustration! My hair is now brastrap length with 3 inches of natural hair.
I never had this much shedding. Yeah my natural hair would crinkle up when it was humid, but I didn't press my hair I flatironed. I wish I could have held out, I would have had natural brastrap length hair. But what is done is done. I have only to grow it out now.
If I could go back in time, I would not have texturized. I would have straight out relaxed. I mean at least I wouldn't have had the excessive tangling that I experience now with my almost close to texture look alike.
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
i spent most of my life natural 25years and i still love my hair texture and i knew all the products and techniques that helped my hair thrive, even though i texturized for the first time in Dec 2003 (don't hate me anyone) LOL, but i think i'll enjoy being texturized for a while, i don't really have regrets about using a chemical i just wished i didn't go to a hair stylist. Good luck Brownie you will defintely enjoy having natural hair, because its wonderful its what God has given you, so love it and embrace it sister.
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
I hear you all! I get frustrated with my hair some days but I am glad I have held back on returning the relaxer. I won't say I haven't been tempted just by knowing that my relaxed hair was not in bad shape, but I chose to grow my natural hair out healthy and long and that is what I did. I am very proud of myself for sticking with it these 2.5 years. It is in great condition and I really do love it...85% of the time, LOL, but the other 15% of the time I am ready to cut all of it off because of its thickness and length! Blueflower, LOVE your hair by the way! Anywhoo, good luck in whatever you all decide to do with your hair. This is a wonderful board and I love the support here for natural and relaxed ladies alike! /images/graemlins/kissing4.gif
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
thanks for posting this. Ijust created a post saying that I want to relax, and I'm starting to rethink that idea. By the way, while you were natural (and for those of you that are still natural) what do you do/use to keep your hair moisturized and manageable?
Thanks

Hello Den!
I hated going to hair dressers too /images/graemlins/confused.gif. Even if I went to the same one, I never got consistent results in terms of them doing my touch ups. I was natural all my life too, and then, I only texturized for a year. The hair dressers were the initial reason I stopped going in for touch ups, but after that, I just decided that I wanted my natural hair back. BTW, I checked out your pictures; your hair looks nice, but of course, it looked nice before too. Keep up the good work---you should reach waist, or be very close to it by December.

Thanks for the compliments,
it was the hairdressers that, ruined my texturizing experience because they kept getting the textures and timing wrong when i went back in feb to be processed more, they underprocessed other sections too it was hell, i started transitioning for 4 weeks (short-lived lol)until i took the plunge with the help of my sister to correct 70% of the mess they created with my hair, thank GOD its a lot better than how it was, now i only trust doing my hait at home. good luck!!!
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
I just want to add that I'm happy that you did relax, Brownie. Everything is a self-learning experience, regardless of how trivial it seems. This was a good learning lesson for you. You know a little bit more about yourself, which, on the surface, is how you like your hair.
I used to regret the natural-relaxed flip-flop that I did over the last 4 years (while in college), but looking back, I don't regret a thing. I learned alot about myself. On the surface, I learned more about my hair and how to take care of it in different states and which texture/process was best suited for me. But I also learned other things about myself on a deeper level. It's all about the journey. /images/graemlins/smile.gif So, appreciate the journey as well as your end result.
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
I was thinking about texturizing, but I don't think I would ever reach my desired result b/c my hair relaxes VERY easily. This is a great thread, I think it helps us be patient when we get frustrated and want to take things out on our hair! Everyone should defintely weigh the pros and cons of any hair decision before taking the plunge!
Re: If I could go back in time, I wouldn\'t have texturized
too late for me. I already got frustrated with my natural hair this summer. I just kept getting knotted hair and my ends were dry. I felt the only style that looked really good was my twist and I loved them, but not enough to have them all the time. I wanted my hair texturized, but the stylist relaxed it bone straight..too straight it's limp on top of permanent color I had when I was natural.
So now I'm in the process of growing out my bone strait hair and cutting it off. I want to texturize but I don't think that's a great idea. I'm just going to self relax and do what I want. I rather rock a short due than have jacked up relaxed or natural hair. When I was permed before I went natural I did my own perms and my hair was full.
I'm glad I experienced my natural hair instead of perms being imposed on me. Plus I know I can stretch my relaxers because I'm not afraid of the KINKS.LOL Also I know I look damn sexy with a ceasar ( boy hair cut for those non-NYers).
But it really boils down to hair styles that one likes. I love flips and curls, I didn't see myself really wearing twist, braids or puffs with an occasional hot iron. I'm afraid of hot irons...bad child hood experience. So I had to realize relaxers are best for how I like my hair with the least damage. However I will never permanent color anything again.
One thing I really learned is that my hair is fine despite it's medium thickness. So I can't use alot of chemicals.
Solution /images/graemlins/spinning.gif...self relax, stretch relaxers, and roller set.
