I'm usually a lurker but I've decided to tell you my story. I used to go to the hair dresser faithfully every 2 weeks, but I would always have a cradle like cap in the front of my head that would never go away no matter what products I used.

So after reading numerous posts about the effect of hair damage from the constant heat from the hairdresser, I decided to start doing my own hair. Well I always thought I was going to be stuck with dandruff forever, but every since I've starting doing my own hair my dandruff is pretty much gone. My husband says maybe I'm allergic to the blue stuff they put the combs in.

I don't know what it was but I seriuosly don't want to go back and find out. Any opinions on what you think it was that they were using?

It may have just been the products (shampoo/conditioner) she used that created build up on your scalp.

I used to have product build up...while my hair/scalp was wet I could scrap it up with my finger nail and always thought I had bad dandruff.

When my hair was dry, my scalp would itch in certain spots and when I scratched it would flake up like dandruff.

My stylist (and I use the term loosely :perplexed) always said I had dandruff and she said she just needed to lift it with the comb.

Fast forward to LHCF...I found that my condition could be product build up and was given some helpful advice of things to try.

I started giving myself a weekly/bi-weekly rinse with seabreeze. Broke right through the gunk to clean scalp.

Another member suggested I keep conditioner off my scalp by doing a pre poo with oils and concentrating on my scalp as to coat the scalp in the event that any conditioner landed on the scalp.

Also, Shtow has had wonderful results with using tea tree oil in a mix of coconut oil or jojoba oils and oiling her scalp.

Anyway, my experiment (from the help of others) has produced a healthy scalp free from gunky product build up.

Who would have thought that I really didn't have dandruff at at :ohwell: :nono:

Hope this long story was helpful

Hello and WELCOME!! I'm a Newbie as well (although I don't feel so new anymore).

I had the same problem. Maybe they were using harsh sulfates, products with mineral oil, petroleum and/or SD alcohol? I've also realized that many stylists don't properly deep condition, moisturize or seal. My last stylist did my hair for 3 years, and during that time my "dandruff" got worse and worse.

After joining this hair board I realized that all of her practices were defeating to me. She washed my hair with sulfates, NEVER, EVER deep conditioned (even after a relaxer), never BASED me before a relaxer (I would have all kinds of scabs on my scalp afterward), never gave me any treatments, she PACKED this stuff called Vitacreme in my hair (the first ingredient is Mineral Oil), she never put any leave in condish on my hair, and to top it off....she always packed on the oil. Without moisture first, oil will seal moisture out, causing dryness. She also sprayed "Spritz" (first ingredient is SD alcohol). There were so many things that she and other stylists did wrong! I never realized that she was part of the problem because my hair still thrived although I had the dandruff problem.

Since joining the board, I've learned that I didn't have dandruff. I had product buildup and a DRY, DRY scalp. I've learned so much about clarifying, moisture, sealing, essential oils and products that I've improved my condition 100%. I no longer have the "cradle cap" look along my hairline, and my "dandruff" has gone from severe to barely there! :yep: I'm THRILLED!

Like I just said in another post, knowledge is power. I'm glad that you have taken your haircare into your own hands! Happy Hair Growing!

ETA: While others are using tea tree, I've found that peppermint does the trick for me.:yep: Just make sure that any essential oils (tea tree, peppermint, rosemary, etc) are mixed with carrier oil (jojoba, coconut, olive, castor, sweet almond, etc) before applying.

I agree with the other ladies. It could have been the poo/condish they were using. It could also come from any styling products they may have used on your hair. Your scalp may not have been able to handle all of those harsh ingredients, therefore, they were very drying to your scalp. Instead of getting the moisture that your scalp needed, it became dry and your result was dandruff. Many ladies have used seabreeze astringent or a tea tree oil concoction to nurse their scalp back to health and have it become free of dandruff.

Thanks for your responses! For the last month I have been using MN mixed with coconut oil and Carol's Daughter oil concotion (can't think of what it's called right now). It has done my scalp good.

Good! After seeing the responses, what do you think your old stylist was doing that caused the dandruff/dryness?
