Just a small vent...

I know what you mean/ Last year i wanted to get some as a meantime style because I had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair. I was tired ositting for hours to get individuals and my weave experiences made me realize that I did not want to keep getting them.

But, I was concerned about work.

I work in corporate office and I am rocking my hair in cornrows....hey love me or leave it alone...

Sometimes I don't think it is just "corporate america". Sometimes it is the environment of the specific office community, your position in the company, etc.

I used to have a job, still in corporate america, where cornrows where totally cool and even admired. But, then I have also worked in other offices/positions where it just did not fit my image there.

Puh-lease!

I also believe that the way you act and dress plays important roles on your whole appearance I wear cornrows all the time and sometimes I let them hang and other times I put them in a bun. I also dress nicely where it doesn't look like I am just an around the way chic with braids to the back.......you know what I am saying. hair style+wardrobe+attitude+what you are viewed as.

Well I may chance it in the summer to see how it goes over...I know the cornrows with extensions you can twist up into the bun to get a more "sophisticated" look...but I can't do extensions and my natural hair isn't long enough at all for the bun or that Alicia Keyes "hanging" look. LOL...I don't know...

Hey so1913! I feel the exact same way. I just ran across this thread during my search on cornrows.

I'm tired of my wash n go puff. And I just tried a twistout that didn't turn out the way I wanted to look like, so I pulled it back into a twistout puff... Now I just wanna leave my hair alone. I don't feel like doing twists all over my head. I want cornrows!

I don't like fake hair either. I wish my hair was long enough to sport some cornrows that had some hangtime. I'm sure there is a way for us to get away with wearing some nice looking professional cornrows.

I took a look at this fotki album where this girl put 4 fat cornrows in her hair and her hair didn't have any hangtime. She may had tucked the ends under. It looked professional and nice and neat to me. She also has a pic with 6 cornrows. Her fotki name is poochie247. No password required. I forgot which folder it was in so you may have to surf through the folders that relate to braids. I'm certainly going to try this style.

HTH!

I'm sittin' at work w/ dukey braids. When I was getting my hair braided I didn't realize they were going to be this big. But no one even looked twice when I got to work. They're used to seeing me in braids and didn't really differentiate these from regular individuals.

I feel your pain on this!! How i wish i could rock cornrows and these people around here not look at me with scrunched up faces. This LF is my first time being able to braid up in cornrows and leave my hair ALONE. Goodluck chica.

I'm a management/strategy consultant and I"ve worn cornrows before.

I had to keep them neat neat NEAT...two weeks tops. Once they got fuzzy, they had to go.

And keep the designs to a minimum. Also keep the ends well maintained - I curled up my ends.

Never had a problem - I actually received compliments. But for important meetings and conferences, the cornrows came out.

Yea I work for the govt in antitrust (thats finance right?) and I wear cornrows...I was nervous at first but it went over well...I think that if you can find a synthetic hair that doesnt irritate you then you should go for it...but definitely bun it!

I say break the stuffed shirts in gently, starting with two french braids and slowly increase the number and/or the way they are styled. Understated accessories can be a plus too.

I now exactly how you feel. I am looking for a job right now and don't want to go on an interview with braids or a phony pony (my usual style lately). I used to wear my texlaxed hair in cornrows back when my younger son was a baby but now that I'm looking for a job, I don't want to do it but once I get it, that may be a different story.

What about if you got the front section cornrowed and still wore the back out? You could still wear headbands/wraps if you needed to for a meeting and you still can get semi-hassle free hair for the rest of the summer.
Or how about two-strand twists into a bun, that can last for up to two weeks and it's a much softer look for the office.

This is exactly how I'm gonna wear my hair tomorrow for work! Thanks for mentioning this...I got my mom to do the cornrows in the front and braid up the back so I can unravel it in the morning.

I agee with one poster when she said it also has to do with the manner in which you dress and handle yourself. I am an attorney who used to work in a very "white shoe" law firm. There was a female attorney there who had dreds. However, she maintained a polished look. My mother in law has cornrows and she wears them in a french twist. She has a management position in "corporate america."

Girl, get yourself some cornrows. You already have the job. What are they going to do? Fire you? Good. Let them fire you and then you sue.

I work in corporate and i wear conrows. It does depend on the office environment. However, I don't think anyone would have the guts to judge my (black) hair. "They" call conrows african braids....go figure.....

Why not do your hair like this?

This is kind of like how I used to do my hair in high school. I didn't have as much hair hanging out though, just a regular ponytail puff on top with cornrows leading up to it - no extra hair. I plan on wearing my hair like this again when I start growing my relaxer out and I'll likely be working in a law office or a judge's chambers around that time... you can't get much stuffier than that.

OUU!!! That's a nice hair style!

Well, I've been wearing cornrows in the front (15 small ones) and a flat-twist-out in the back. I love my hair like this! The managers and bosses who wear suits and ties still look at me the same. I still carry myself professionally. I also feel more confident this way for some reason. When I was wearing my wash and go puff, I sometimes felt like a lil girl. I look so young as it is. By the way, I'm the only black that works in the finance department.

I thank God that my work is in my home and I dont have that worry. I feel for you coporate sistas who have to worry about what the office says about a particular hairstyle. It shouldnt have to be that way...but we live in the white mans world. So1913, I think you may have enough hair to cornrow into a bun.
