I dont want my hair to break off. I have had braids in the past and this has happened but now I realize that I did some things wrong. Number one it was done with fake hair and very drying. I was young so I did not moisturize my hair. Number two they were too long. They were so heavy on my head that it weighed down my hair and that caused stress on my hair. Number three they were too tight. They probably choked my hair to death. I want to try braids this time so this is what I am thinking about doing. I want to get a braiding tape and learn how to do it myself. I dont think it will be that I hard I just need to have patience. I will use human hair this time and I am going to do a test strand in the middle of my head first. Before I put the braid in I am going to measure to see how long it is. Then after it is in I will condition wash and moisturize regularly. I will take it out each week to see if there is any stress or damage done to my hair. If so then it will be in the middle of my head and it wont be that big of a deal. I really want a new protective style and I want to try the Crown and Glory method. I think that I have included everything. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hey Hot Coco Gurl!

I want to say that braids are a great protective style. If you relax you should wait about 2 weeks to 0ne month after to get them done. Make sure before you get them done that your hair is well conditioned, not brittle. They should be too tight because as you already know that will break your hair off faster than you can grow it. I don't think the length had anything to do with your hair breaking unless too much braid hair was used for each natural hair section.
I do believe it is key to wash and conditioner your hair while in braids and also to keep it moisturized on a regular basis. The crown and glory method is great for growing hair and Robin's braid video makes it easy to learn how to do it yourself. Good Luck!

You will be fine. I had the same worries when I started braiding again. With the new knowledge you have you will be able to wear braids with no problems at all! Good Luck!

hotcocogurl, good luck with the braids!! i wore them when i first started. i used synthetic hair without any problems, but i also washed them regularly. i don't think that human hair is required in order to successfully wear braids. if you can afford the human hair, go for it! i was on a low budget though.

if you don't find someone to trade for the video, maybe you could spend less on the hair and buy it from the Crown & Glory website...

keep us posted!!

Thank you for your suggestions Adrienne. I just wanted real hair b/c I had fake hair before amd my hair broke off really bad so I dont want to go down that road but where I live I can get some cheap real hair. Philly has hair supply stores on about every corner.

i hear you, and i'm glad you can get human hair cheap, but i said that because believe your hair probably broke because you didn't provide moisture, not because of the type of hair used. i've seen people who don't moisturize have the same result with human hair.

I recently braided my hair, myself for the first time. I got the braid video from the Crown & Glory site. It was pretty easy and didn't take as long as I thought. I wanted to do this because it's so hard to get a braid appointment, then it costs an arm and a leg when you finally do. There are some people who do braids at home, but they are hard to find and then you really don't feel comfortable going to someone's home and you don't know them.

I've had success with my braids. I'm surprised everytime I take them down because I gain length. Just remember that you still have your own hair under there that you have take care of.

Gosh, what you mentioned about taking hair down weekly seems like a lot of work. I have braids now, human hair, but the thing about it is, since you are not braiding hair all the way down, make sure your ends are cool, because your ends are being left exposed. I wish I could do my own braids though, it would be cheaper and I would take them out more often. When I got my braids 3 weeks ago, my braids were so freaking tight, but not as tight as when I got invisible braids, they have loosened up tremendously. My hair is very thin and fine around the edges and those braiders even braid that stuff, well some of those braids I have had to cut out, because if I didn't they would snap that little fine hair. But as I take those braids out, I notice hair shedding with it, was it too much tension? Well anyway, good luck on your braids, I think it will be better for you to do them yourself.

I ment the test braid not the actual braids all over my head. I hope you hair is ok when you take them out.
