EVERYTIME I clarify and use aphogee hair protein my hair knots and dreads something firece! And I loose a lot of hair. I don't know if Im protein sensitive or what. I clarify with a clarifying shampoo (non sulfate) and with baking soda and vinegar:look:. I use the aphogee hair protein, let is dry, wash it out and then use a moisturizing con. My hair ALWAYS dreads up. Help! Im transitioning BTW but this happened to me while I was relaxed aswell. Also, I find that aphogee hair protein is the only thing that stops my wet breakage for weeks.

Why the baking soda and vinegar on top of a clarifying shampoo? That's probably too much. I would start there and eliminate that step. Clarifying shampoos usually do their job well enough.

Do you get knots and dreads while using the clarifying shampoo without the Aphogee treatment?

You shouldn't be following a clarifying shampoo with vinegar and baking soda. Aphogee is hardcore, and your protein moisturizer may not be able to cut it. WHat are you using? I would try a reconstructor and focus on moisture. You're stripping your relaxed and natural hair with your current routine.

Great question OP! I had similar issues when I used aphogee. Based on my results, I've assumed that I am protein sensitive. I need to research to find other options for protein. By the way, I'm relaxed.

To echo everyone else, I would eliminate the vinegar and baking soda (especially both together!). The clarifying shampoo should be more than enough.

put the vinegar and baking soda down your hair doesnt need all that AND clarifying shampoo thats already stripping my hair would dred up too if i done all that

dudleys have a strong protein thats meant to be better than apoghee not so hard on the hair have you used it?

I've never used a pure protein. As I've shared before, I read about how easy it is to get it wrong--plus one then has to balance with moisture...which again means a need for skill to get it right. :wallbash: The article I read suggested a reconstructor--a product that's part protein, part moisture. It's what I've used and I've never had problems.

Here's a page where I share more about that^^. Read beyond the first post that comes up coz I quote the article verbatim that I learned that from:

I agree about dropping the baking soda and vinegar step.

Maybe you should try the Aphogee 2 min. instead of the hardcore one. If it's causing your hair to dread up, then maybe it's just not the product for you. But try it again without the super duper clarification.

ditto.....back away from the cider and vinegar following clarifying - and in general be sure that you even need them at all (i.e. is your hair highly porus and you need to force the cuticle closed to lock in the moisture). also try Aubrey GPB which is a great all natural protein condish. HTH

I would suggest not clarifying when you use the heavy protein if it knots & dreads your hair. Try using a moisturizing shampoo immediately after clarifying. The baking soda & vinegar are not needed, you're doing too much.

As Nonie stated, I like to use a reconstructor for my protein, although, I do have some heavy protein conditioners.

The reconstructor gives me a balance of protein & moisture and I can use it more often than the stronger protein conditioners.

Try these...

Aphogee 2 Minute INSTEAD OF THE TWO STEP.

Aveda Damage Remedy line (very nice)

L'Anza Healing Strength line (extremely nice)

Hairveda Methi Sativa (sp?) or even the Hairveda Acai Reconstructor (very nice)

I agree with the others about letting go of the baking soda and vinegar.

Definitely Aubrey GPB....I probably will ditch all of my protein products altogether in favor of that one..:yep:

Vinegar and baking soda is a powerful solution to strip grease and plaque, tarnish etc. Don't use it for hair, it's probably causing the problem.
