My back(nap) area just won't grow past 1 1/2In on the left and right corners. It just breaks off, and I don't know what to put on it to keep it from breaking off.

Help

Do you self relax? If that's your weakest area then you or your stylist should probably apply the relaxer there last.

If you don't relax, then are you wearing your hair in a style that pulls on the hair constantly: bun, ponytail, roll?

Don't cry, please don't cry...I used to use S-curl on mine when I first went natural. Try to keep it moisturized and seal with oils. Keeping it braided, no heat and low manipulation helps too. Check out dsd's album too for inspiration. Good luck. Mine has gone from about 1/8th an inch to 2 inches in 4 months.

I put my hair in a half bun, but leave the very back out, because I thought that was the reason. Its still not growing though, and i'm about to just shave the corners.

I noticed you wear a flat-iron bun- is that everyday or very often. My hair breaks at the same place so I can't wear my hair pulled up anymore, that area is just to fragile. I recommend relaxing it last too, that is what I have to do, but I would be interested in hearing what others have to say b/c I have only been on the boards 3 months and that area of my hair went from being totally broken off to about 2 inches so I would like suggestions too for getting it to keep growing.

I'm afraid to use S-curl

I'm on a no heat challenge for 6months, so I haven't had heat in my hair all month. That is the hardest thing i've ever done, but I don't relax my hair.

I hear you. That's why I said "used to use". I mean I still use it sometimes but not often because it can be irritating to my skin. But my point is make sure that area stays really moisturized with something you like. You really have to baby that area for it to grow out. Don't give up though. This area probably just needs its own separate regimen.

Should I stop combing it with a baby comb, and use wider tooth combs ? I just got me two deman brush, and a k-cutter. I hope that helps, and I have a moisture problem. I've tried shea butter, mango butter, and oils on that area with no luck.

Have you tried Biotin?
You could also try the rosemary/lavendar oil mixture to encourage growth.

I have a bottle of lavendar and rosemary oil that I don't use, so I wil try that. I use to take biotin, but I stoped after a month. I'm naturally a very hairy person, but biotin put hair on my chest and upper lip.

Divine, I too was once afraid to use the S-curl. In my mind I was like I dont have a jerri curl but then I used a little after continuous raves that I saw.
Well long story short my hair is lovin it. My hair is so soft, manageable, and I have hardly any breakage like 10 strands of hair a day.

I tried it before, but I have bad reaction to it. I went through all that effort to steal it from my grandma for nothing.

I would use a wider tooth comb first, then use your baby comb after separating into very small sections, no more than one inch, go very slowly, combing out tangles starting at the ends. I think for moisture you need something that has a more "wet" consistency like the s-curl. I like ORS Shea Butter Softening Hair & Scalp lotion, Kids Organics Shea Butter Detangling Moisturizing Hair lotion and Elasta QP Recovery Oil Moisturizer. Seal with oil and put in style that can be left alone for at least a few days at a time, like twists or braids. This portion of my hair does not like much manipulation and loves to stay moisturized, sometimes it's needs a boost of moisture throughout the day, certainly every morning and night. HTH

I will look for these different types of lotions, but thanks.

I find that the collars on my coats and shirts tend the rub against my nape causing breakage. When I eliminate this factor my hair is able grow without hindrance. Do you think that your clothing may be the problem?

Whoa! I was actually talking about the Biotin creme...I didn't know the pills could do THAT!

That's a good point, especially wool.

I used to have that same exact problem for like 10yrs then i started going to a pro to get my hair relaxed. so i think it was caused by me relaxing the kitchen first and leaving it on too long, thus causing breakage. Once you come up with a plan to stop the breakage, then id' suggest getting micros for a few months...that's how i got my kitchen to grow in fast. (or of course just treat it well and it'll grow on its own)

And another thing to remember (I constantly have to remind myself as well). If you damage your hair, then it will break off...no matter what type of super product you put on it. so instead of trying a superproduct, really try to think what could be the problem that is causing the weakness. I'd say im almost sure it's the relaxer (or any other chemical ur using), so ask your stylist to start from the front next time.

and as far as not using heat. man i know it makes sense, but i just don't think it works for my hair...i went without heat for 2months and i always had alot of breakage when i'd comb...but when i just started back blow-drying (on low) and rollersetting, etc....my hair turns out smooth and i have very very little breakage.

One thing i was just thinking about doing (which goes to show u how really insane i am) :ohwell: .....I decided i am going to put 1 or 2 very skinny horizontal braids in my kitchen and keep them braided ALL THE TIME. so that they won't be manipulated and break. i have thick hair so i don't think that it will be noticeable.... :look:

I have a patch in the front that was slow to grow as well. It is leftover from when my hair was falling out a couple of years ago. I've been doing scalp massages on that area (I'm too lazy to do the whole head) with herbal oil. Anything w/rosemary, lavender, horsetail...stuff like that should work. I made a bottle of my own oil but I've seen hair growth oils that have those ingredients without too many preservatives. If you want to do the scalp massage, make sure when you are doing it you aren't moving the hair around too much. Either run your fingernails or a comb over the area. THis has been working for me and that area is growing much better than it used to. Good luck :)

A great tip I got from this board is to just skip relaxing the kitchen area every other time I relax. So, if I relax every 3 months, the kitchen area would get done every 6 months. That, plus the suggestion of applying the relaxer last to that area, really helped me. HTH. :)

I agree with Hopeful. I'm not natural but my nape area is "transitioning", an experiment I've been doing in babying this area (no relaxer touchups here). I do have a separate regimen for my nape and it's working very well. It gets extra massages and is very well moisturized at all times. I usually keep it in two braids which is hidden by my hair.

I had this problem and I figured out it was because my stylist at the time was not completely rinsing and neutralizing that area when I got a touch up. My nape area broke off to less than an inch.

This is what I did to grow this area back. After I wash and condition I would soak that area with castor. I wash 2 to 3 times a week so I did this every time. Currently my nape area is about 3.5 inches long and growing. A friend of mine did the same thing but used vaseline and hers grew back too.

HTH

What?!!! :angry2:

You should keep extra moisture in the problem areas and wear protective style. Do not let your hair come in contact with your collar, pillow case etc. I use to have the problem with my edges. I kept them mositurized and now, no problem at all.
