I need help. I have no skills styling this hair.

Here I grow again!
*sigh* I need serious help with being able to style this hair. It's not straight or silky. I'm sure it has to do with my flat ironing technique and the leave ins/heat protectants that I'm using.

I tried to run out and buy some argan oil for a silkier feel. Um...yeah, I may need to have a stylist curl me. I want to try the saran wrap technique but I can't wrap my hair without making a cone to save my life.

This is what happens when you protective style while growing to new lengths. When you get there, you have no experience with the hair. Well, that's my case. Still trying to work it out.

Whose bright idea was this to wear my hair out again? Ah well, hubby is happy just watching me tossing it around trying to get it to look like something.

Any suggestions? I've never had problems like this when I was fully relaxed. My hair is laughing at my Caruso Rollers. Maybe I should've done a twist out. It's so thick (not that that's a bad thing).

I'm definitely dealing with different hair.

NJoy....are you transitioning? If so...how far along are you?

NJoy...Congratulations on the extra length and thickness!

I suggest a curly rollerset or twistout. I may be a bit biased though because I don't particularly like my hair totally straight.

I'm sure your hair looks beautiful, however you style it.

Go ahead and do the twist out. I have done them with only four sections when I am super hair lazy. You mentioned thickness. Do you have lots of shrinkage? If so, and you want a looser wave, try weighing down the ends of the twists with ponytail holders. The kind with the balls are great for this.

Well, you know I've been texlaxing since May of last year. I'm in a stretch right now, 32 wks post. And since I've only flat ironed the roots (and not that well), my hair is acting totally foreign.

I think I will do a twistout this weekend. But for tonight, I wanted big cascading curls. Right now I have some curls, some bends. And my roots are reverting already.

I'll say that I didn't flat iron tiny sections at a time. I did do chunks so, I know that didn't help. But, I'm not that patient with flat ironing.

I know I'm not going to get a silky straight china doll look. I just want big bouncy curls that hang long.

:cry3:

And maybe I'm expecting too much. Maybe I should expect more texture. I don't know. Gotta find a healthy hair salon or something.

Should I try to flat iron again with smaller sections? hubby is ok with the wild look (he would be ). I want something a bit more controlled and flowy. :ohwell:

I can't help you, I'm in the same boat. Hopefully I can get some advice too.

ETA: Have you tried flexi rods though? I like the jumbo ones. I can't quite get them right to wear down, but Leobody has a good YT vid on how she used them on flat ironed hair. Hers came out really cute. Can't link the vid from my phone, sorry.

What I do when I wear my hair straight is put it in a braided ponytail overnight, undo the ponytail the next day and it gives my hair a beach wave-type look--big waves.

ETA: I mis-read the OP  You can see what I use in my siggy pic and I get a very silky press and I don't know what's in the Crisco, but it helps with reversion too. I do small sections and my iron is no higher than 370 degrees.

Ugh...And, I think that I have about half of the hair that you have on your head and this is my dilemma--I think we need some classes on how to deal with hair after we've reached our goal length...Thankfully, I still have a WAYS to go--but you on the other hand, SASSY LADY:spinning::drunk::spinning::drunk:

Still in love with your hair!!!

Suddenly feeling like a drama queen.

I'm feeling a bit better now. I've decided I'm not going out like a punk. I'm going back and flat ironing the length of my hair instead of just my roots (why was I tripping thinking the rest of my hair would just fall into place? :nono:)

I still have a bit to do but, I'm doing smaller sections and my hair is straighter, silkier and flowy. D'oh!!!

I'm doing this for hubby. But, I am wearing a twist out for our weekend away.

I'll update when I get thru.

I am just saying @NJoy we want Pichas Remember you always did this to me.

Where the pichas at  Where HUH? :giggle:

Part your hair in sections go over the roots quickly then go over them again taking it down the length, I do one pass but no more then 2 or slim out your sections.

Now you know you're dead wrong for not having ONE picture in here. :bat: *pouts*

Awe, y'all rough on a sistah. Didn't I say that I'm still trying to work this head out? Where da pitchas at? Where da pitchas at?

Somebody come over here and help me with this head and we can have pitchas reeeeeeal soon like. :lachen:

I finished flat ironing my hair (I hear ya, JJamiah. I did it like that, pretty much). Then I wrapped it the best I could...with my limited skills and all, and am sitting under the dryer for a few minutes (I don't remember how long but, uh...yeah. Here I sit :look:)

I was going to whine over my ends looking ratchet but, couldn't really understand why. They're in good shape...just were not flat ironed straight. And the bonelaxed ends are spread out more because of the thickness of the rest of the hair. So, I'm not worried about those ends. I'm VERY happy with the thickness of the majority of my hair tho.

I'm definitely going to follow HairCrush's twist out video to see if I can get my hair to look similar (hey, the thickness has me trippin and thinking I'm in the league with all-natural Hair Crush. :lachen:)

Shoot, I'm thinking, if I can get the hang of flat ironing once or twice a month, maybe I won't need to texlax anymore.

:look: Yeah, let me slow my roll. I still have to get past tonight. :lachen:

Anywho, I will post pics hot of the presses...assuming hubby doesn't complain about me dragging on. I've got a hot date tonight. And an even hotter weekend planned.

TTFN

And thanks for the support. Ya know I'm extra and need hand-holding from time to time. 'preciate cha, All!

Oh, and keep the tips coming. I'm taking notes. Really, I am! :yep:

I'm glad that you worked it out. I'd love to have that problem! :-)

I think that is a huge issue for lots of people who protective style - not knowing what to do with all that hair once it does reach the goal length. I had one friend go back to relaxers after not knowing how to manage her natural hair, then she big chopped again.

I always tell those who are going natural via big chop or transitioning from relaxed hair without cutting that they need to play in their hair at night and weekends so it's not foreign to them once it does reach the goal length.

For daily wear and texture: braidouts/twistouts!

For special occasion beautiful curls: bantu knot outs!

For LHCF brownie points: Post the darn pix, girl!!! :D

I texlax too. And I do log stretches as well. Unfortunately at 32 weeks post my hair is a frizz ball. Ain't no way I could rock a straight flat ironed style.

The roots revert before I even leave the house. Somewhere around 15-20 weeks.....i quit. I just do curly styles or half wigs.

Sorry I have no suggestions. :(. But kudos for Going 32 weeks!

LOL - I checked LHCF just to see if you had posted any pics! I don't post much, but I keep up with what's going on, and I knew you were styling your hair for your anniversary. I'm sure your hair looks fabulous, and wearing a twist out for your weekend sounds like a good plan. Can't wait to see the pics!

I can't help either. I am style challenged as well. I only know how to bun and when my hair is straight I do big waves made the flatiron! I will be in for a rude awakening when I finally cut off my relaxed ends! I am subbing for advice as well!

yeah, I keep waiting for the paperclip to show up on the front page, letting me know there is an attachment on the other side of the link. Girl you are playing around; you kon how this crowd can get.

Yeah, like I said. I have NO skills when it comes to styling this hair. Shoot, I didn't have skills when I was back at SL so why am I surprised. :ohwell:

Anywho, I mussed and fussed with it til hubby had to drag me away from the mirror. I tried to wear it straight back but, pulling my hair out of my coat when putting my coat on was so dramatic that I felt uncomfortable and ended up bunning it. In other words, I punked out. Whomp!

So, I have no stunning Anniversary dinner hair pics. :nono: But, I can show you what I was working with. *big sigh*

Ok. Here's when I flat ironed the roots only and ended up feeling like Mufasa from the Lion King. Um yeah, you can see that my hair also laughed at my Caruso rollers attempt. :nono:

Now, the good thing about that is I did want the thickness. I think stretching and texlaxing is working in that area but, look at how crazy my ends were looking. They're not ragged but without flat ironing them, they were all over the place. You KNOW I couldn't do anything with that! And then I had the nerve to try to wrap it? :nono: No, honey. No.

And here's me after I went back and flat ironed the length (well, I still avoided the ends as much as possible).

Oh, and that's not what I wore out either. My dress was black so, no need to try to show a hair shot with that.

Today, I will be twisting my hair for tomorrow and then will do a twist out for Saturday and Sunday. I was pleased with my last braidout attempt (except for the relaxed ends that were not braided all the way down) so, I'm really hoping the twist out turns out well.

Any tips or suggestions for that? I've said it a zillion times. I'm ultimately trying to do a twistout like Hair Crush. I just love that result.

A'ight. That's all folks. Carry on. :yep:

I can't believe after all that hard work you ended up bunning...

That's okay, as confidant and poised as you look in your photos I bet you still had heads turning. :yep:

I think if you follow her directions for twist out that you'll be fine.

As for doing your hair in big spirals my hair is not as long as yours but I've had to do in sections with a curling iron and then pin curl for a few hours. I plan on purchasing something like this:

http://www.folica.com/tools/curling-irons/sedu-revolution-clipless-curling-iron

as soon as I figure out which one is best etc.

Here's a tut that may help with the look you want:
http://www.youtube.com/user/lilpumpkinpie05#p/u/8/NPVjm1rARXo

It always falls after a few hours so I'm hoping the sprial iron will help the curls last longer.

I use much bigger pins so I don't have to bother with doubling up. Hope this helps!
