And what were the results? And is there much of a difference between the milk and the oil.... I'm asking this because I keep seeing the milk around me but not the oil....I guess that is because I live in a predominately Latin neighborhood and they use it in their food...( I think)

Coconut milk doesn't agree with my hair. I tried it twice and each time it ended up being a tangled mess!

I use both. Cocomilk/lime (love it) but wash it out. Not sure about that cocomilk smell left on hair. Think the hair may smell spoiled after a while.
Coconut oil (love it). Do you have a wholefoods store in your area? If not try an Indian or West Indian grocery store.

I missed the earlier post... but, wha'cha using the coco-product for ?

I need a NG tamer, and I am diligently searching...

When I use the coconut milk, I mix 1 cup w/an Avacodo in a blender and use it as a moisturizing conditioner. I sit under the dryer for 15-20 min. and the moisture is bangin' along w/the shine. The slip isn't great but I don't have issues w/tangling. Plus I just use the Capilo Honey & Milk rinse as a final rinse and then I have major slip.

Oh, ok. Coco-milk/lime works for me. I notice better results when I let it set in fridge for a few days and just use the cream off the top as suggested. I did follow up with Elucence MB and I love the resultes.

There were a couple of threads on henna based product too. I ordered Lotus powder. I havent tried it because by the time it came in, I had braids. But from the posts henna products may help also.

coconut milk is more like a conditioner and coconut oil can be left on the scalp. try castor oil to tame your new growth.

It's reported by henna users that henna actually loosens the natural hair texture TEMPORARILY.

I've used the coconut milk sometime last year, once but can't remembe what for. I'd have to check my journal to see why but I wasn't overly impressed with the results (I still have 3 cans in my pantry).

Coconut milk and oil is derived from the meat or the fleshy white fruit of a mature coconut. The milk can be made either thick or thin.

Thick coconut milk (aka "coconut cream") is prepared by pressing grated coconut meat through cheesecloth to produce a rich thick cream. For thin milk, the previously pressed meat is soaked in water and pressed a second or third time for thin coconut milk. This milk is thinner but still has a high oil content.

Coconut oil - because the coconut meat has a very very high oil content, when the coconut milk (preferably the "cream" from the first press) is allowed to sit covered in a bucket for about 24-36 hours, the oil naturally separates from the water producing a crystal clear oil rich with nutrients. The oil is then scooped off the top and a "thinner" milk with less oil content is left at the bottom.

My family is from west africa and this is the "traditional" way to make the milk and oil there, no fillers, no heat or refining, just the rich, natural milk and oil. I guess here in the U.S. that would be described as "unrefined, organic" . . .

The cream, milk and oil is used primarly for cooking wide variety of foods, with the cream and milk used mostly to make sweets and thick sauces. The oil being used to cook as well as for skin and hair. I cook with both the milk and oil -- I buy the canned milk from the "international" section of most grocery store and the oil from heath food stores that sell the unrefined brands. I tried using the oil on my hair, but its way too oily and weighs my hair down more than I prefer, so I stick to cooking with it. Whenever I remember to pre 'poo, I use coconut milk -- just pour entire can over hair and massage through well, rinse and proceed to poo -- I like the results because of the high oil content of coconut milk.

HTH!

I forgot to add that coconut oil behaves more like butter -- when cooled, it hardens into a solid and only liquefies into a "true oil" when heated, just like butter, margarine, lard, etc. As a result, it is frequently stored and sold in 'jars' rather than bottles . . .
