I haven't used henna, but my mom uses it all the time. It makes her hair healthier too. So the color you got is black?

I may be lookin into that.

Yep, I got balck and it worked wonderfully. I was just looking for something that did not dry my hair out but it DID make it healthier. Great stuff!!

I uesd a brand called colora henna that I paid 3.99 for. It is permaent and I have read that it can not be used on relaxer hair but my hair is fine so far. It is very soft evey though I have experienced a little dryness but I did blow dry it afterwards so that is to be expected.

Here is some more info that I thought you ladies might like to read. I got it from http://www.hennapage.com/henna/ppd/whatisppd.html

Watch Out for PPD!!

Do you want to find out what is in a box of Henna or “Black henna”?

Look in the box. If the powder is green, and appears to be ground-up plant leaves, it's probably henna or indigo. If the powder is coffee colored or black, it's probably para-phenylenediamine based hair dye.

Take a little of the powder, and mix it with water.

If “Black Henna” powder is a green plant powder and smells like frozen peas, its probably indigo. Mix some of the powder with water. If the surface of that mix turns blue in 20 minutes, it’s indigo! Indigo will not hurt you if you put it on your skin. It won't stain your skin black.

“Black Henna” mixes with PPD are usually dark brown or black. Sometimes there is some henna in the mix, sometimes not. Some of these mixes don’t have much odor, others have an awful chemical smell. Mix some of that powder with water. In 10 minutes, black dye will drain out of the mix.

Henna is a green plant powder that smells like hay. Mix that with water and wait a few hours. The surface will turn brownish.

Henna is a green plant powder. If its mixed with water will turn brown in a few hours.

PPD "Black Henna" is a blackish brown or black powder. If its mixed with water, black dye will drain out.

"Black Henna" indigo is a green plant powder. if it's mixed with water, it will turn blue in half an hour. Want to see what this looks like so you can tell the difference between PPD, henna and indigo? See: http://www.mehandi.com/PPD/indjamppd.jpg

I used the good green kind. No PPD for me. Green and blue is what I had and it did smell like peas.

The bad PPD kind is the stuff that can not be used on relaxed hair. By the "Black Henna" aka indego is safe. PPD can cause all types of bad things to happen to you. Stay away from it!

Here is more info that I got from the same website:
1) Some people make a black temporary tattoo they call "Black Henna" with synthetic black hair dye containing para-phenylendiamine.

Para-phenylendiamine based black hair dye should never be put straight on your skin, plain, or mixed with other material. Synthetic Black Hair Dye is illegal to put on skin, because that is not an approved use. Even when this dye is applied to hair, people must wear gloves, and they try to not get it on the scalp! PPD, Para-phenylendiamine can seriously injure people. Para-phenylenediamine is a strong sensitizer, transdermal toxin and potential carcinogen. Many people get itching, blistering and hair loss from using black hair dye on their hair.

Well my hair appears to be shiny. I just wanted to add that there is no such thing as black henna. If you dye or dyed your hair with black henna then is was either that bad

PPD (which is regular hair dye) or indigo. As far as I have read indigo is not bad for relaxed hair.

Just a bit of correction on the information from the henna page. Henna...natural henna can range in color from khaki....green...to brown. Most of the henna from Pakistan is more of a brownish color. They will all stain your hair red however because they are natural henna. Indigo, which is not henna, is a rather bright green in color. However, herbal/henna powders that are a combination of natural henna and another natural dye color the hair different colors. There is natural herbal/henna hair powders.

The PPD that is discussed is in all of the synthetic hair dyes that you purchase from beauty supply stores, grocery stores, drug stores etc. Bigen is almost 100% PPD. You will find PPD listed as Para-phenylenediamine in the synthetic hair dyes. So to avoid PPD, you will need to avoid a lot of the synthetic hair dyes. You clue on such products will be the warning about possible allergic reactions.

Glad you found a safe and natural way to color your hair. What you used sounds like an herbal/henna hair product.
