that cornrows help with growth because they naturally stimulate the scalp. Is there any validity in this claim?

they may stimulate the scalp while your hair is getting pulled up for braiding, but other than that..not sure.

I wear cornrows all the time and my hair grows at the same rate it always has. I thought the hair's growth rate was genetic?

I don't see how a hairstyle can make your hair grow.

Well people on the board have said that scalp massages increased their growth rate because of the stimulation of the scalp. The website claimed that the cornrows stimulate the scalp.

My theory,

Braids do aid during the growth process, but as far as stimulating growth, the reason why our hair seems to grow faster in braids, is because it's a protective style, therefore the hair is not being manipulated, therefore causing the hair to retain length(i.e. ends). The less you manipulate your hair the more length you can retain. If you think about it as you comb, brush, or style your hair you lose hair strands, but in braids you don't seem to lose as much, althought hair sheds as part of it's natural process, you seem to retain when you're not playing in your hair.

braids or cornrows may aid in the growth process only because u dont have to fool with your hair much like combing, brushing, etc.

That's the only correlation I see too. But I have a friend who's hair grows really nice in them, so I dunno.
