I give up...

I wanted to dye my hair black. I had a packet of (black) henna and thought I'll use it. Although my hair colour does seem darker. I don't think I got the Jet black look I was going for. *sigh

I've attached the before and after pic. Does anybody know a trick to get it abit darker without using another dye :ohwell: Im hoping there's a hair guru that can answer that.

P.s Could somebody please drop what hair type I am because I've seen so many diff types fall into the same catergory, and I'm interested in youtubing people who are a similar type to me and getting tips.

Thanks.

Henna is never black. Always a green paste. The only natural black dye is Indigo. If you didn't use Indigo perhaps that is why you weren't getting the results you desired. What did you mix it with? Perhaps the dye release time is a problem?

Using henna and indigo, it darkens after you apply heat. Using any type of heat tools darkens the dye.

ps- You look like a type 3c.

Thanks for the info.

It was black henna some pakistani man sold me. :look: I kept it on for a little less than an hour... perhaps I shoulda kept it on for longer. I just forgot how slimey and messy henna can be. The whole experience let me traumatised today.. :nono:

Beware of "black henna": it has metals that can give allergies. With body art quality henna you can be on the safe side.
Indigo + henna mixed together = brown.
Henna and then indigo (in 2 phases) = jet black.
Henna needs time to release its colour, whereas indigo can be mixed a moment before being applied.
Indigo can fade a little bit when you wash your hair: it will stop doing so after the third time you have used it.
Indigo by itself (without henna) gives you a blue/grey hue and has no conditioning properties, that is why people apply henna before.

Henna and indigo are both permanent and the colour builds up, so maybe you want to start with a dark brown as there's no going back.

Hope it helps!

Ciccina just pretty much went into depth on what I wanted to say...lol. A mix of henna and then indigo will get the job done. Using Henna that is any color other than green powder is a warning sign that there might be other bad ingredients like metals that can turn you hair green and make it as dry as the sahara. BAQ henna (body art quality) depending on the crop you get the dye can release as fast as 30 minutes. I leave mine on the hair for 8+ hours and that's enough time for the dye to get to my hair.

I use henna and indigo (2-step) process to dye my husband's hair jet-black.

He's a 4A with 1/2" - 1" hair.

He hates the long process of keeping henna on his hair for hours. So, after washing his hair and applying coconut oil last weekend, I mixed the henna and immediately applied it. I put him under the steamer for 1.5 hrs. He rinsed it out. Then I mixed the indigo and immediately applied it to his hair. Steamed for another 1.5 hrs. His hair came out a perfect jet black. I DCd for 30 minutes afterwards.

He loves the 3 hrs process instead of 10 - 12 hrs. There is no need for henna to sit to release the color or to turn your hair red to get the jet black color. If you do not have a steamer, though, you will have to let it sit on your hair for hours for the infusion of henna. Then apply the indigo and let it sit for another 2 hrs. This is how I did it pre-steamer.

I do this about every 3 - 4 months when he gets a hair cut and the greys appear.

I don't know anything about henna but your hair looks really pretty before and after the color! :yep:

As far as hair typing I'm not really good with that either, but my best guess would be 3c. Yes, I know I'm not much help! I just came for the hair porn! :look:

All I wanted to say is your hair looks pretty!!!!!!! I have rinsed my hair with coffee three times and it has keep my roots dark, but did nothing for the ends of my hair.:ohwell: Good thing I can cover my ends with my phony ponytail.
