All those long strands that were coming out in excess were because of the bun that I wear. I've been wearing it everyday since about february. It was my favorite style! Now what do i do? What new style should i wear for naturals and what can i do to stop the breakage?

i recall Leejure discussing this kind of breakage a while back from wearing a bun the exact same way all the time. You may not have to give up your bun forever. Just start to vary how you are making it to avoid putting stress on the exact same hair the way you do by making your bun in the same spot every single day -- HTH -- jainygirl

that's what i've been trying but it's so hard for them to turn out right. i'm natural and they just look like an afro! and it's thick so they don lay down. I'm still searching for products to give me that shiny pretty look

I've thought about this one too, because I have had the same problem in the past and finally my sides are growing great now. What I'm going to do is either do a few cornrows along my hairline and pull the rest back, or else just cornrow all my hair back in to a bun, instead of using gels to make it look slick, because in my case, it ain't gonna work, at least not until my hair gets a little longer.

How did the bun cause you breakage? Did you secure it too tightly?

[/ QUOTE ]Yea i think i made it too tight, but i'm natural and the only way i could get my hair to lay down was to make it tight. I thawt i was doing good and everything with the baggie on the end.

i think that I'm going to have to do the twist outs or maybe just plain ol twists. I was going to stay 'bunned' up for the rest of the school year. What do i do in the meanwhile? should i do a protein treatment or something to stop the breakage?

oh yea and i don comb my hair when i pull it into a bun. i comb it in the shower when it's soaked with water. i jus pull it back and put a satin scarf over it

What did you use to pin your hair up? I'm just asking, because I stay away from the bands with metal...they rip the hair.

spray it with what? I spray it with water and then put on my leave in and then pull it back into a bun.

Yes, that's what I meant..some water or an oil mixture. But you already do that.

i used the black thin fabric bands without the metal piece.

I think that when you secure those too tightly they can lead to breakage as well. Try the thicker ones. I don't know the word for the material

but I think they are better for the hair. I only use the thin ones for securing the ends of my braid(s). For my ponytail I always use the thick ones.
