, what is IU=?, mcg =? , and mg=?, which is better, I have vitamins that say like ex. 200 IU of vitamin D, 600 mg of vitamin D, or 50 mcg of vitamin D, or 100 % of vitamin D, which is high or better, some of my vitamins say 1.7 mg but 100% , I am confused.

, how much should be taken of each?

You may want to send a PM to Jade21. Ask her whatever you need to know concerning vitamins. She is very helpful and seems to know everything about supplements and vitamins. With her advice you can't go wrong!

Happylocks,

mg=miligram, mcg=microgram, IU=International Units

The percentages are tied to the RDAs (Recommended Daily Allowances)

If you have a specific question with a nutrient, as to amount, usage, etc, feel free to send me a PM.

1 g = 1,000 milligrams (mg)
1 mg = 1,000 micrograms (mcg)

Thus...

Depending on what the RDA is you would divide the (mg) amount by the RDA amount and then multiply it by 100% to get the RDA in percentage.

Example: Biotin 5mg= RDA 1666%

The recommended daily allowance of Biotin is .30 mg

If you have a pill that is worth 5 mg then you would divide 5mg by .30 mg and that would give you 16.66666 then multiply that by 100 and you would get 1666% which is 1566% more than the RDA.

Another example is say you take 400 I.U. of vitamin E, the RDA is 400 I.U. so 400 divided by 400 equals 1, multiplied by 100% = 100% RDA which means that you are meeting the 100% recommended daily allowance.

I hope this makes sense....

Here is a link for the RDA RDA

Happylocks,
The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is simply just enough according to the government that the average person needs to make sure they aren't deficient (sp?) in a particular vitamin or mineral. However, to stimulate hair growth or treat other health problems naturally, much higher doses are usually required. That's why people on this board take 5 mg (1,667% RDA) of biotin for instance. Basically, the RDA is the bare minimum.
HTH,
Jen
