wet rollersets are hard for me too.

they are easier with a fresh perm
humecto makes my hair easier to manage, easier to rollerset
also, u could use regular rollers with the covers instead of duck bill clips
u can air dry hair first for more control and then do a rollerset on dry hair, rewet hair with leave ins
macherieamour sells a rollersetting dvd on her site healthytextures.com

I could never rollerset but I kept trying over and over (maybe 6 times) before I was happy enough to wear my rollerset I think the saying "practice makes perfect" is the truth. maybe dry set is easier to try then wet or get a manaquin head and practice practice practice also I still don't really get the clips (metal) I do like the Dominicans they use bobby pins to me a lot easier

I with you! Too time comsuming and annoying. Takes me back to heat everytime. Oh well, My hair is doing fine.

Practice makes perfect ladies! :)
It's the best thing I've ever learned to do for my hair.

I learned back in March and my hair has had tremendous growth since; sorry I gotta update the siggy. ;)

It may take some time, but it's soo worth it.

I've never tried roller setting my own hair, but I am going to try when I get a relaxer. I hope I can still do it with my Gold n Hot soft bonnet dryer..

LOL! I am the same. I just airdry. I used to flat iron after airdrying. Now I don't. I use a scarf to lay down my edges and I am good to go.

Try doing the ponytail rollersets first. They are so easy. This is how I first started and later I got the hang of actually rollersetting without the ponytails. Try it, I'm willing to bet they'll come out just fine. :yep:

i just started doing rollersets myself and its going pretty good but i am still trying to get better at it and faster...watch the lorraine video on youtube and try the pony tail roller sets as well..and you will get the hang of it..

It took me quite a while to get the hang of it. Now it's my favorite thing to do, especially when I'm many weeks post. The mohawk rolling method has been the only way I could perfect my technique.

There are a couple of good tutorials out there as well. My best rollersets are when my hair is very wet. They come out smooth and bouncy (mostly because of my setting lotion mix).

Don't get discouraged....just keep practicing, you will get the hang of it.

Keep trying! When I first started my issues was tension and where to place the clip on magnetic rollers. Once I got those down, my roller sets have been lovely! Compared to flat-ironing, my hair feels so much softer and healthier after a roller-set & I don't get that slightly burnt smell to my hair.

I have only flat-ironed twice since I joined LHCF and discovered roller sets. (and w/ help from Macherieamour)

I am having a hard time with rollersetting too. My hair is always dry why I take the rollers out! I cant seem to get that smooth look that others seem to achieve from rollersetting. Anyone have any suggestions?

I havent tried it but I know that I cant do it. So I settled for Curlformers, which I love dearly.

I can't rollerset either! I have tried magnetic rollers and flexirods it always ends up looking like crap, which is extremely annoying after sitting under the dryer for an hour.

You gotta make sure your ends are soaking wet when you put them on the roller. Also, magnetic rollers work well in achieving the smooth look IMO. Also, make sure your fair is fully dry when you remove the rollers. If not, it'll be a hot, frizzy mess. And if you're using setting lotion, make sure it's diluted. ( I personally don't use setting lotion to set my hair with, but others seem to like it ok.)

What are you using to set it with? You may have to experiment with different products until you find one your hair really likes.

The bolded can't be emphasized enough. I usually sit under the dryer for an hour and a half and my hair still isn't dry--my hair retains water. This is why I never try to do my hair the same day I need to go somewhere. I always rollerset my hair in the evening after I am done with my day. I sit under the dryer for an hour and a half and it is completely dry by morning. I use lottabody setting lotion heavily diluted with 1 part lottabody and 5 parts water with two capfulls of silk amino acid (I have a 24 oz spray bottle).

Since joining LHCF, I went back to some of the practices that helped me get to APL twenty years ago (as well as adding some new healthier practices). First and foremost among these is no direct heat!!!! However, not only do I rollerset when I wash my hair, I also rollerset my dry hair every night before I go to bed. My ends are thanking me for it!

I would advise you to practice until you get it. It really is one of the best things you can do for your hair if you relax your hair!

yeah. forgot what i was about to say. got distracted by queen t's hair and bellebebe's makeup.

oh yeah, i suck at rollersettin too. i can barely make pincurls. i stick w/ braidouts lol

Please don't give up! It definitely takes a lot of patience and practice. I really found Macherieamour's rollersetting video to be extremely helpful. I watched it several times to make sure I took in all of her tips.

I cant get rollersetting either. I know practice makes a big difference. I could rollerset my hair about 13 years ago. Now, I can't get it and I stopped trying. This is something I want to master........in 2009.

Try the ponytail rollerset first (I have pics in my fotki) then move onto the real ones. I have gained a healthy head of hair by primarily learning to rollerset. It took me forever to learn but if I can do it, anyone can.

God bless

Thanks Lonei, I am off to check out your fotki.

Hmm... maybe my ends are not wet enough. I will try this on sunday. So you use the magnetic rollers with the covers or do pin/clip them in place? I have been using the ones with the covers. Thanks

When I first started I sucked...hard. But just keep practicing. My hair would be all puffy and dull looking. I now use mesh rollers w/ the pins, but the tip I learned was to wrap end papers around them so they would stay. W/out the end papers they would hold really well in certain areas of my head but definitely not the back or the area above my ears. I would have to keep readjusting. I'm attaching a few pics. It's hard to see the end papers bc I wet them w/ water first and then wrap around the roller. I find that if I try to put the end paper on my hair and then apply the roller, my ends come out frizzy bc i can't get the ends as smooth w/ that method. Now these pics are a few months old. I had to use snap on magnetic in the back bc my hair was not long enough for the larger roller. But now it is yay!!
