For some reason detangling my hair while wet is a big no no :nono:. I found this out the hard way last night. I co-washed my hair last night and attempted to detangle while in and out of the shower and it was horrible. The snapping and tearing were too much to bear :wallbash:. Although I've know this for while I just thought that if I added more conditioner it would make the task easier. My hair seems to be easier to detangle when it's dry. Has anyone ever experienced this. Does this mean that my hair is unhealthy?

I am right there with you! My hair takes on another form when wet and I have a really hard time detangling my wet hair (especially in the crown area). I always loose a nice little bit of hair on wash day because of detangling issues.

From what I have been reading on LHCF, I think that a key is to find a conditioner that really works for your hair. One that provides good moisture and slip. Unfortunately I haven't found the perfect conditioner for my coarse 4B hair. Also I think that it is important to detangle your hair properly before wetting, making sure that you remove the shedded hairs that will just add to the detangling nightmare.

I hope things work out for you because I know all too well what you are going through!

Thanks Pear! I do detangle my hair before I get it wet but it just seems like the moment water hits it it tangles right up. I've bought detangling shampoos and such but nothing seems to work :nono:. The only time that I can comb it without breakage is to let it dry out completely then comb it.

try soaking in conditioner, dividing your hair into small sections and starting from the bottom...?

What products are you using?

My hair detangles best AFTER shampoo/BEFORE conditioner.

Btw, I use Keracare Hydrating and Detangling shampoo and CON (green bottle) when I use this method.

Whimsy and Andreab: Both of these these suggestions sound like really good ideas. I will definitely try that on my next wash.

Mizzesq: I am currently ussing Infusium 23 moisturology, Dove, and Paul Mitchel's the detangler. I would never be able to get a comb through my hair if I didn't use conditioner...:nono:

Have you all tried detangling in the shower under running water while rinsing out the conditioner (not sure if this was already implied).
If I took the time to detangle w/ lots of conditioner in, it would still detangle but it would be a long process (doing this watery conditioners work better for me than thicker ones). But detangling under running water gives me the ultimate slip:grin: And I can do it after dc with superthick conditioners like humecto (I think the thickness actually helps in this case because it sticks to your hair better/longer while rinsing out:yep:)

I rarely have problems with tangles.

While my hair is still dry, I thoroughly detangle my hair with my fingers, starting from the ends working upward, carefully removing shed hairs...this step is very important for me. Then I apply my DC (Motions Moisture Plus) to dry hair, followed by my shampoo.

Hope this helps!

I wouldn't try to detangle dry hair at all. The only time that I will detangle is when there is a TON of VERY moisturizing conditioner running throughout my hair. Find a conditioner with the greatest slip. Though CON is a shampoo, it provides the best slip, and I find that after I detangle with CON, I can just go ahead and deep condition or add a moisturizing leave-in with slip and not attempt to comb again unless I am getting small tangles. Don't forget to add oils to your conditioner as well. EVOO, jojoba, alma and coconut are the best for me.

This is a good idea as well. Pre-pooing with oils and conditioners are good.:yep:

How about this: Before washing part your hair into four parts with your fingers braid them and wash each braid individually.Only apply shampoo to the scalp and rinse slather on conditioneron each braid after that . braid it back up with the conditioner still in it and go to the next braid and repeat. By the time you get to the last braid all your hair should be covered in conditioner. Rinse one braid at a time using the pressure of the water to help you detangle with a wide tooth comb. This ensures the conditioner stays in each section for about the same amount of minutes. It works wonders for my hair especially when I'm stretching to twelve weeks. HTH!

fabiennd, have you tried detangling your hair under the water flow from the shower head??? I can't detangle wet hair, nor can I detangle my hair with just conditioner. I can only detangle when water is flowing over my hair from the shower head.

Me!!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely cannot do it in the shower. I have to wait until my hair dries. Or if anything, I try to detangle my hair BEFORE I get into the shower. That way I won't have to comb my hair after washing. I just put it into a protective style and let it airdry. The next time I comb is when i am about to wash again.

Thank you ladies so much for all of your help. I will try to incorporte all of your advice and see what kind of results I get. Let see...

*Completely detangle hair before stepping in the shower, then braid into 4 sections
*Prepoo with coditioner and oils.
*Shampoo and codition in sections
*Detangle under running water.

I'm sitting here looking over my shoulders cause my boss keeping coming over to my desk. Doesn't he know I'm going through something...

I am texlaxed and the way I detangle is to do an oil rinse. Leave the oil on for as long as possible (for me usually 2 hours). I cover my head with a plastic cap then cover that with a bonnet. Once I rinse out the oil I get out my secret recipe (any V05 cheapie conditioner mixed with Suave Humectress). The majority of my tangles loosen from the slip of the two conditioners and the force of the shower head.

To avoid tangles I condition wash my hair in a braid. Detangling is never a problem this way.

I can't help you but I do feel your pain. My hair snaps easily when it's wet but it's strong as wire when it's dry, so I don't believe it's damaged -- it's just being difficult. I really wish I could do rollersets but they're out of the question.

Try to detangle with a serum. After I wash, condintion, and towel dry I put Paul Mitchell Super Skinny serum in my hair and It helps a lot. My last relaxer was May 4 this year and I was struggling until my sister told me about the serum. Hope it works for you.
