I cant be the only one who cant part my hair straight

I can do the front fine.. but then the back looks like a jigsaw puzzle or uneven...

when trying to cornrow straight back, I somehow can manage to start with 8 braids in the front but only enough room for 5 or 6 in the back

It's kind of tricky because you have more width along the front of your head and it's a smaller width in the back area (nape). What you can do is part like you normally do in the front, but use your fingertips to feel where you stopped parting at to feel the scalp. Then place the comb (or rattail end of a comb for me) on the scalp a lil bit above where it stops at, and continuing parting. Keep doing this until you get further down. At this point, your part should be looking straight. As you get into the nape area, you will still do the same, but the hair sectioned off will come out a lil narrower than the rest of the hair that's sectioned off. Also if you're aiming for example, a thumb-size section of hair starting at the front, it will start out thumb-size but your sections as you go along will get a tad smaller to maybe 1/2 or 3/4 a thumb-size, depending on the thickness of your hair. Gosh I hope this helps somewhat.

Can't part straight to save my life. That's a fabulous explanation, and I SWEAR, I THINK that's what I'm doing...... maybe my head is just lumpy.
