I can't achieve true BSL, APL, etc. until I stop this breakage

I have severe breakage in the middle of my scalp. The subject is pretty much explanatory. Any suggestions ?

If you are not looking to cut your hair, do you think specifically targeting that area by baggying at nightime will help? I had that issue when I first started my journey but now as my hair has grown, baggying breaks my hair off.
I am so bad about remembering screen names:ohwell:, but there is a member who has a fotki showing how to wear dual baggies into one big bun. She is an older member...maybe she or someone else can chime in on how to do that if you want to wear the baggy during the day, too.

I wash once a week.
I've been using the Nexxus Vitatress line ( Biotin shampoo, cystine treatment, voumizing leave in )
I've trimmed twice since my siggy ( about 1-2 inches )
I've started using Nioxin follice booster.

What do you think Artemis ?

I have similar breakage to you (except my hair is much shorter). As bluefolli suggested, I am going to start doing the baggying method, but I'm going to do it both at night and during the day (under my bun). I need to try something new for sure. I also think my ponytail holders may be the culprit --- that, plus not changing the location of my bun. So I want to nip in now before it grows out like that. Can you think of anything that may be the trigger?

How long have you used this regimen and what was your regimen before this? Please include how you style your hair now and how you styled it prior to your current regimen. (heat use, rollersetting, airdrying, daily styling, etc.)

ETA: Also, are you relaxed and if so with what (brand & lye or no-lye) and how often? Do you do it or a stylist?

Thanks, SG for asking this.

Quest, what do you feel your products are doing for you? Like, are they meant to moisturize your situation? Strengthen? Do you feel they do this?

To answer Supergirl, Cutiepie & Artemis' questions:

I started my Nexxus Vitatress Regimen about 3 weeks ago, I'm using these products mostly for strength. I've been trying to balance the protein and moisturization. I've noticed less hair coming out, but I stil hear the snapping in the middle with every stroke.

I've been wearing my hair in a bun for the last 3 years. I haven't used heat for the last 13 years ( only my hood dryer after rollersetting ).

I relax my hair, I just switched to lye recenty, becuase no lye perms dried my hair out.

I had breakage in the same spot. It was because my hair was a totally different texture there (a bit rougher/coarser/and drier than my 4a). Once I started putting more moisture on that area it started catching up with the rest of my hair. What's helped my hair immensely is applying a small amount of oils (coconut, evoo, and/or castor) daily as a sealant to my leave in. I upped my water intake and started taking my omega 3's. It's made a world of difference.

How are you securing your buns? Do you wear them in the same spot? Sometimes that can cause breakage in an area too. I like to vary the position of buns and I've sworn off ponytail holders and rubberbands for this reason.

Hmm, just some postulating on my end:

You've noticed less hair coming out. Maybe it's getting better? When trying a new regimen it can take a while for you to see results...

I'm looking at the Vitatress page now; very interesting...Not familiar with it.

All I can say right now would be to continue to monitor that area, baby it, apply conditioner there first when dc-ing and applying leave-ins, etc.

Are you bunning in the same spot all the time? I dunno, maybe that could be related...

I'll have to think on this some more...I always have trouble in one spot (the crown and/or nape) so I know it can be frustrating...

i had breakage like that before too. i found that putting the hair in one loose braid or one big loose two strand twist and clipping it up helped tremendously. looks like this:

I'm about to leave for work, Artemis and Flawedbeauty I'll catch up with later on tonight. By the way, I'm not sure if I mentioned that I trimmed about 1-2 inches since the pikistrips picture.

I am very anemic (severely), can anyone tell me the connection between anemia and hair growth. Maybe that's the culprit.

That is definitely a factor, but since it's breakage, and not hair loss (like you don't have a bald patch), I wonder...Unless your iron levels have been fluctuating this past year. Think about how old your hair is in that area, ie, how long it's been since that hair was new and 1st grew out of your scalp. Then think back to your health at that time. Was everything ok? Were you eating healthy, drinking water, iron in control?

This breakage has been going on for about a year. Overall I'm in ood health. My doctor says my iron levels were excellent during my last physical (November 07). I can't seem to pinpoint the cause

Cool! I do a similar kind of thing, sometimes with quite a few braids but I'm currently just doing two braids. I also cornrow my nape. It looks like this... (ladies please keep a straight face; this style is for INDOORS ONLY!

This helped me too when I had nape issues. :yep:

I'm now recovering from my first (and hopefully my last) setback and hope to reintroduce these practices.

Quest, I'd recommend these things for you as well. I know you want to have a balance of protein and moisture, but when in doubt, it is safer to try to have more moisture in that balance than protein. You might want to try more frequent DC-ing with moisture for a couple of weeks and see if that continues to reduce the breakage...

Oh before I forget: How long are the breakage strands?

:lachen: awww i think its cute!!! i rock mine indoors, out doors...i want long hur dont care lol!

I honestly I don't know, becuase the breakage is in the middle of head towards the back. Which explains that huge gap of hair missing in my siggy. All I know is that the hair in that section measures only 5 inches from the scalp.

You said you trimmed before...do you trim often/regularly? What do your ends look like if you hold them up to a light source?

this seems like a good hair treatment regime. However if it was me I would cut my hair healthy and start again.

Sorry Quest, but I have to agree with this ideology. :ohwell:

I say this because I "dusted" for months thinking I was doing the best for the hair, but my hair type just has so have scheduled "trims" --for preventative purposes. I had the "wu-tang" in my hair and couldn't figure out why...I had to charge it to the game, cut some and just go from there...

Maybe you could just chuck the regimen and start from scratch, adding in new products every few months as you go. I don't do or see your hair on a daily basis so I don't know, but if I had breakage that severe, I'd just start over, literally and figuratively.

Sorry I cannot suggest a miracle product or regimen, etc. It just goes like that sometimes :nono: The thing to keep in mind is that the breakage did not occur overnight. Something you have been doing (or not doing) led you to this point in your journey, and the only person to discover what that is/was is going to be you...

Good luck chica :hug2:

I am very anemic (severely), can anyone tell me the connection between anemia and hair growth. Maybe that's the culprit.

I am anemic also. Anemia causes my hair to be very dry and weak so it is very easy to break. Using products with heavy protein only seems to make the dryness worse. I have been using alot of ayurvedic products and my hair is responding well to them. Just remember with anemia your hair is already very fragile so you have to treat it very gently. If you do buns do them very loose if you are using some sort of ponytail holder. I have stopped using them for the most part. Most importantly let your physician check you hemoglobin levels and prescribe an iron supplement if needed. If it is the anemia that is causing the breakage no hair product will solve the problem. Your hemoglobin level with have to be increased to normal first or your hair will break very easily.
You can have healthy hair with anemia but it just takes a little more extra effort.
