I AM A CNAPP!!!

I am SO HAPPY to have discovered my family of hair twins! I've spent a long time very frustrated and confused by my hair. Now I finally know EXACTLY what hair type I belong to, thanks to a thread on Nappturality.com!

Yesterday, my mom made a comment to me in the car that I took SO badly. She was like "why don't you just comb your hair?" This was two days after I did my hair TWICE in one day because she didn't think it looked "nice enough" for the New Year's parties we were going to. I was REALLY REALLY upset because I personally thought my hair looked fine (in a pulled back chunky fro), and she doesn't understand that I can't be pickin and manipulating my hair everyday if I want to retain length!

To be honest, I threw a little (or huge, lol) tantrum, because I was (and still am) SO frustrated that she and everyone else don't understand my type of hair. When I told her my position on low-manipulation, she was like (in a nasty tone in my opinion) "you can comb your hair! I put a little product and comb my hair everyday!" Talking to me like being natural is not an excuse to not comb my hair. Mind you, she has a COMPLETELY different hair type than me, and she doesn't understand that. Although she keeps DAMAGING it and distorting the texture, I think she's 4a with BIG coils, NOT the tiny tiny kinky little coils I have. She also said, "When you were little I combed your hair everyday!" I was like "my hair was never long Mom!!!" as I remembered all those mornings of her ripping through my poor hair, dry. I don't remember going past shoulder length. She never did and still doesn't understand my hair type. It's very frustrating.

I got really upset because this is how the rest of the world looks at me. If my hair isn't PERFECT in some uniform way, or in a stereotypical AFRO, it looks "unkempt." It's really upsetting because I'm aiming to compete in a pageant, and I know if I were to win I'd need to wear "public-friendly styles" that wouldn't offend those who don't understand my type of natural!

Anyway, I'm off to stalk all the other C-Napps and figure out what the hell I need to do. I'm glad to have some company in this cruel world.

All hair is beautiful. Don't let your mom or anyone else frustrate you.

Just think: if you keep competing in pageants with your natural hair, little Black girls everywhere will have an example of a beautiful woman is proud of her natural hair. They need that. :)

I looked at your fotki, and your hair is pretty!

Thank you so much! That's exactly why I'm holding out on relaxing in any way!

I love your texture! It makes me wish I didn't end my transition.:look:

Thank you!

Hello fellow C-Napp! My family is like that too-- "When are you going to do something to your hair?" Me: "It's done!"

Girl, I love your hair!!! Unfortunately, sometimes the only way to get our hair to be a nice round puff is to pat it to almost nothing. Because every time you pick it with a pick, that part sticks out higher than the rest. :giggle: Gotta love the antics of our hair.

Your hair looks very soft and healthy. May I ask what your regimen is?

Thanks! I'm still working on a set regimen without braids (just wigs for 2009). This is what I did last year:

1. Used Bee Mine Growth Serum about 3 times a week.

2. Used Mega-Tek about every day.

3. Stayed in braids, twists, weaves, etc.

4. Moisturized my hair everyday (with coffee or aloe vera juice, sealing with any oil).

5. Co-Washed about every week. Clarified with Shikakai soap when necessary.

I never felt like I sat down and thought of a great regimen, but I was definitely taking the easy road with braids and twists.

I love that picture of your hair. I don't think there would be anything wrong with wearing your hair like that for a pageant. And I think most naturals comb their hair way more infrequently than those whose hair is straight. I rarely brush my hair and only comb/detangle my hair when I shampoo (at most once of twice a week). Your mom may never understand this, but as long as you are happy with your hair you may need to learn to live without her approval in this area.

As far as you saying:

In my opinion (and I've never competed in pageants) there doesn't seem to be a lot of room for non-conformity in general, no matter what the non-conformity is, in pageants. And I rather think that a person is defined by more than what their hair texture, color, length, etc. is (1a -4b).

You'll still be you regardless of how you wear your hair. You just have to decide how much you'd be willing to cater to the judges in that area.

Your hair is very pretty! In fact, it looks just like mine here:

:) Your hair looks perfect in the photo, I don't know how it could possibly be any neater. A good way to maintain uniformity without having to comb all the time is to do a twist out. If you do it on wet hair, it will be very defined and will last for many days.

Thanks Mwedzi! You are one of the first ladies I noticed on this forum to be my twin!

Thanks SEMO, you're right. There isn't a lot of room for non-conformity in pageants. I can't stand the idea that I have to please judges... but hey, we'll see how it goes.

I know how you feel. I go though the same thing seems like on a daily basis. I had to learn how to love myself afro and all. Remember you are beautiful no matter what others think. If you to try change up you look try doing a twist set. Every night I moisturize my hair and twist it 4-8 big twist. In the morning I untwist moisturize and oil my hair and it looks so much better. HTH

I'm glad you found your family!
I think we've all hear that "Do something with your hair!" line, especially with 4b/Cnapp textures. I've heard it too many times to care. What is my hair supposed to do!

Your hair is beautiful.

My DD has the same texture hair, she loves it. I do too, I'm just glad she knows how to do it now!:yep:

Your hair is pretty. I love the color and that head band is real cute.

I have come to understand that I am also a CNAPP too. My textures is very similar to yours.

For your pageants, you can do twist-outs. CNAPPs can do fierce twist-outs:yep:.

Your story reminds me of when I first when natural (years ago) and my grandmother would say "please comb it" and my response was -- It is combed:look::grin:...it's all good.

Love your hair and enjoy it!!!

your hair is fine. My family was the same way but as my hair got longer and i was able to do a little bit more to it, then, it became, pretty and it looks good. Hang in there, be you, be unique, be the woman that God made you.

Your hair is very pretty and it reminds me of my moms back in her natural days. She rocked a serious fro! And yours looks great here too! I also love that color.

Idk what Cnapp is but I think your hair looks healthy and fantastic! :yep:

I looked at your picture and I was like ummm
I'm confused. All I see is beautiful hair and by the way the color is to die for. I don't know if its my love of natural hair that has me biased LOL but I honestly think your CNappps is pretty fly!

I am a CNapp too. However, I have been using henna for the past 2 years (from I was relaxed) and I think it has helped to make my texture more manageable.

What texture is a CNAPP?

This is from the Nappturology 101 blog:

What is a cNapp?
Then it happened. Someone started a wonderful ”hair twin” thread on NP (Nappturality). Basically, it was an All Call to anyone whose product-free hair has no defined nap pattern. Instead, whether wet or dry, our loose strands each take their own separate route to give the appearance of a fluffy, cottony, cloud of naps. So we nicknamed ourselves cNapps. The response was tremendous. Seems like we came out of the woodworks to post in this thread. Who the heck knew that so many of us would find hair twins in that thread? Well I’ll tell ya, it was like finding long-lost family members up in there!

Thank you so much ladies!! I hope I can grow that thick skin really quick lol. And I will definitely be trying Henna now (thanks Mystic!).

I'm sorry that your family is stressing you out like this.
Your hair is lovely - Perfect Afro Texture and it looks like you're doing a great job of keeping it healthy and cared for.
