I just had my relaxer done three weeks ago. Since then I've had nearly an inch of new growth. Now because of the different textures my hair is starting to break more than normal. I don't want to relax it again this soon so what other alternatives do I have? I did a protein treatment with Jehri Redding Natural 100% Protein which has always worked for me in the past but this time it did nothing. Will I have to break down and relax again or is there something else out there that will help tame my new growth?

Thanks!:)

Try using some Roux Porosity Control conditioner after your next shampoo. You apply this conditioner to your hair and leave on for about 1 minute, then rinse. Follow up with your deep conditioner. Several ladies (myself included!) swear by this stuff when we have lots of newgrowth or are underprocessed! Here's a picture of it, you can find it at Sally's or many other beauty supply stores:

1st of all - Congrats on all that growth!

I don't think you should relax so soon.

What are you doing to detangle? I notice when I have lots of NG, if it is moisturize and nicely detangled, I can maintain a rollerset style because all I have to do is fingercomb.

I have been using a wide comb plastic pic to ONLY detangle my NG ( not pulling it all the way through). I do that once a day and my hair is way easier to manage and I get less breakage. It's like my NG is more bushy and soft under there instead of coiled and breaking at the demarcation line. Of course that only works if I keep is moisturized and use certain conditioners.

I don't have a problem with detangling. I mist my hair everyday with a Pantene leave in (1 part Pantene moisturizing conditioner to 3 parts water). It really softens my new growth and makes combing my hair easier but its still breaking. My problem I guess really has to do with styling. Maybe I should try a roller set so I don't have to comb it everyday. I think combing it has a lot to do with the breakage but I can't go out of the house with my hair looking wild. How do you do your roller sets? My hair is right below my ears. Should I use regular perm rods or should I use the soft rollers?

I agree, when your NG is moisturized, it makes all the difference. Yeah, it's still bushy and poofy, but as long as it's not tangled, I'm happy!:)

Also, hottestdiva, the PC condish is pretty cheap. You can get a tiny sample size bottle at Sally's for something like $1.60 with a Sally's card. You can also do a search for "Porosity Control" here...there are TONS of posts/threads about it!

Thanks Precious Jewel -

My mom used to use this but I never knew what it was for. I will check to see if she still uses it if not I will check out Sally's on my way home.
I really need to get this breakage under control.

Are you using heat at all? If so , dont! Thats what Ive been told as well :) And dont relax this soon , because it either wont take ( i know from experience) and then break or you may end up overprocessing it. I agree with everyone else on keeping it moisturized. I am kind of having the same problem. BUt are you sure thats it breakage and not just the regular dead hair shedding ?

I think Rollersets are great because we don't have to comb. They have been great for me. I cannot do wetsets, I just do dry rollersets over night after I flatiron once a week. I don't flatiron bone straight though so it can get tricky, but it is working for now. I am 5 weeks post right now and I am in the same boat as you. I am trying to keep it going for 4 more weeks. I now how you feel! :)

I have never used perm rods. They don't seem good for sleeping in, IMO. I just use satin covered foam rollers. I am sure perm rods would work, though. Roller setters what do you guys think?

Some of it is shedding. When the weather changes my hair sheds. I also have a five month old that I just weaned so some of my shedding is coming from that because I didn't get my usual postpartum shedding. I am concerned with the actual breakage because I'm seeing more and more hair in the comb that I know isn't shedding. It's the kind I always get when I know I need a touch up. Ugh. I'm glad to have all this hair growth but it won't do me any good if the hair is breaking. Sigh. I guess I just have to take the good with the bad and pamper it more and more.

BTW I don't use any heat at all. I gave up the curling irons about ten years ago.

My sister does the straw sets but I have never been able to get the first one in let alone do my whole head :) . I will check Sally's to see if I can find some satin covered foam rollers. I used to roller set my hair in high school but for the life of me I can't remember what I used back then. Maybe my mom will remember and I can go back to it.

Just to let you ladies know, Sally's is having a sale on PC. If you buy the conditioner, you get the shampoo for free. Has anyone ever used the shampoo?

I used the Porosity Control conditioner for the first time last week and this is exactly what I did. It helped so much with detangling.

I've never used the shampoo, but with the sale at Sally's I may try it.

I have satin covered foam rollers from Walgreens. I've seen them at CVS, too. I used to sleep in them but I haven't done that lately.

I use a good Protein Conditioner such as Giovanni's Nutrafix to curve or stop breaking. The protein conditioner by Ion is good too. Ion can be found in Sallys and Giovanni's at your local health food store.
