I am so afraid of going to the salon, however, being natural is not working for me anymore.

Any advice? Fyi, I'm a 4c.

I second that. Is your hair in good condition is your number one concern and if your having issues detangling now be prepare need a trim after the relaxer because you may need one now. I wouldn't be afraid to go self relax. Follow the directions and if you need to do one half of your head at a time if that's what you need to keep the timing right. Good luck

I relaxed my virgin hair in November but I went to the salon. I was too scared to do it by myself. It helped that the stylist who used to help me with my natural hair also knew how to relax virgin hair too.

Do some research and find a good stylist who can relax it for you.

I had a setback in 2009 with self relaxing so I am a bit apprehensive about doing it again myself but I can live with myself for messing up but I won't feel good if I were to pay someone to do it. I have learned a lot these past 2 and some years and will incorporate what I have learned in my relaxing regime. You should check out some of the relaxing videos on Youtube before you begin and good luck.

I watched one yt video that said you should iinitially put the relaxer 1/2 inch from the scalp and then 1/2 inch from the ends. You were then to go back and work the relaxer into the scalp and take it down to the ends.

Years ago, when I had relaxers, it was easy for me to maintain as I always did my touch-ups myself. It's just doing the initial relaxer that I need help with.

You can check out Healthyafrohair and ulovemeg2 for hair relaxing tips. I love both young ladies because they show as well as tell you what they are doing.

Would silk amino acids help to lesson any damage to my hair before I get it relaxed? If so, how do I do it and where do I purchase it from?

mensa, did you decide to do it yourself or will you go to a stylist? Idk how amino acids play into it. I actually just relaxed my hair after two years, but I had it professionally done. He actually did the middle of my hair first, as in the middle section of the hair since it is the farthest from the heat of your scalp. The hair closest to your scalp will process the quickest from body heat, the ends were last since it is the oldest. He also did my ends last because they have color so he changed to a sensitive scalp rhelaxer on this part.

You're doing the right thing to research and be sure to get the best info to not have any setbacks. Be careful and come back to show us pics!! We can't wait and we're happy for you.

please go to a stylist. you need someone to access what state your hair is in and they will be able to move quickly.

No, I didn't relax yet...I'm still too "scurred." :nono:
But, when I and if I do, I'll be sure to post some pictures.
