How to reduce bulk?

I would like any tips on how to reduce the bulk of my hair on the sides of my head. My hair gets very dense about halfway on my head and then produces this very bulky look there. Can you think of a way for me the cut the bulk so my hair lays more uniformly?

My mom, a cosmetologist, uses a razor comb to reduce bulk in clients' hair. It something similar to this, but not exactly this comb.

So you want your hair flat against your head? Flat hair isn't a good look . You'll be glad for that thickness once it gets longer.
