I'm new to the forum, looking to grow my hair a little, but essentially make it stronger and stop it from breaking and shedding (it's doing both). I work out a lot, which makes it a bit difficult. I do co-wash once or twice a week with a moisturizing conditioner, use Carol's Daughter's black vanilla leave in conditioner and moisturize with Carol's Daughter's hair balm and Lisa's hair elixir. I am concerned that I haven't been giving my hair enough protein. I used to use Aveda's Curessence, which was replaced by the Damage Remedy and it did wonders for my hair. Tomorrow I am going to try Aphogee's Treatment after a moisturizing shampoo and follow up with a moisturizing conditioner and leave-in. Can someone comment on this regimen and tell me if I'm doing this right? And should I no longer wrap my hair? Thanks!

When I was having bad breakage and shedding, I would prepoo with Motions CPR (and still do) and then I would DC with Alter Ego Garlic conditioner. So basically one was to stop the breakage and the other for the shedding. The only proviso is that my hair felt a little dry after so much protein so I would follow up with some type of moisturizing conditioner-possibly even mixing a conditioning treatment with the Alter Ego Garlic.

Hope this helps.

Bump...I want to know how to pre-poo tooo!! Thanks!!:)

A prepoo is any type of pre-shampoo treatment. It does not have to be a protein treatment, IMO. Some people prepoo with just oils (usually on both hair and scalp) or conditioner. You just put whatever prepoo you choose on your hair/scalp, let sit (some do this overnight), shampoo, and condition as normal.

Hi
I understand the method of pre-pooing but why does it need to be done?what benefit does it have - why before you wash and not after you wash?

TIA

This may sound obivous but giving your a hair propper shampoo afterwards is key. I am on this whole no-poo trip so I did a hot oil treatment, and then just washed my hair with water and put some conditioner in while in the shower. My hair came out kinda mushy afterwards. It took a good two days but it did feel extra soft after that.
Thats just a reminder that you should always shampoo after oils (with conditioner its more optional)

Since shampoo can be very drying, pre-pooing gives you hair an extra boost before being exposed to things that dry it out. You should also floowing with conditioner to make sure that although my may have cleaned your hair, you haven't striped it of all the moisture you have been trying to put into it

You don't have to do it. Some people just find regular shampooing to be drying to their hair, so a pre-poo treatment helps to counteract that drying effect. IMO, if you use a shampoo that is free of sulfates (like ammonium laurel sulfate or sodium laurel sulfate - these are drying ingredients), then you probably don't need to pre-poo at all. A sulfate free shampoo, like Elucence or Creme of Nature, won't dry out your hair. I don't pre-poo often, only if my new growth seems a little dry. And when I do pre-poo, I don't deep condition afterwards. I just use a rinse-out conditioner. Doing a DC afterwards just seems like overkill to me.

Cant remember if I read it on here on in a mag that conditioning on dry hair is really good for your hair. I dont remember what the benefits were from it but they stressed that thats one of the best way to condition the hair. I will have to keep on searching for that. I prepoo twice during the week. One includes my protein txtment (eggs, molasses, cholesterol txtment, and bone marrow). My hair comes out extra strong after that txtment. But everyone is different. I will post in here if I find that information.

Bablou- I never condition of wet hair anymore. Not only does it save me a trip to the shower, but some say that if your hair is full of moisture from the water, it wont take as much moisture from the conditioner. I have had no problems with this..so far so good

I've been DCing on dry hair too, and it's worked well for me so far! Saves time & water, too.

ok...i prepoo and i love to BUT and i have seen the same question i'm about to ask. how does the conditioner get down deep into the hair, dry hair that has had oils, cones etc on thru out the week? should you have to clarify 1st? should you really clarify 1st? i moisturize everyday and seal with silk infusions(loaded with cones) and i also spray my hair with distilled water, amla oil and a leave in conditioner. help??:perplexed

Good question! I don't worry about product buildup too much because I rarely use cones, but in your case, it would probably be best to clarify/wash before deep conditioning.

so you're saying i shouldnt even bother prepooing then? thats what i need to clarify....no pun intended:lol:

I use alot of cone heavy products too and I like to pre-poo. What I have found that works well is clarifying every third wash.

so does that mean that you just apply the deep conditioner to dry hair and then sit under the dryer for a while and then rinse out...

does this really work because if it does then i will definitely do it... i find it a hassle having to deep condition wet hair because you get in the shower to wash then get out to deep condition under dryer then back in shower to rinse out...hate getting in and out of shower so much so i end up deep conditioning a lot less than i should.

TIA

Yes. I apply it to dry hair, use heat, rinse it out and shampoo in the shower. I end by using a Dominican rinse or a cheapie conditioner to help detangle, then follow that with an ACV rinse.

I used to use a whole bunch of stuff: EVOO, Ojon, deep conditioner, etc. I would apply it to dry hair and leave it on anywhere from 20 minutes to overnight and then wash it out. You can pre-poo with or without heat, but for my hair, I've found that when pre-pooing with oils, it's best to use heat.

I used to have a heating cap and I would oil my dry hair, put on a shower cap and then put the heating cap on for an average of 20 minutes and then shampoo and condition as normal.
