How to make bantu knot outs less frizzy

I usually use my spray bottle and wet each section and use a leave in and coconut oil before I make the knot. Today it came out really dry and not really defined as I would like.

How can I make it so my hair will be less frizzy and have more definition?

TIA

My bantu knots usually come out frizzy when they haven't completely dried. This usually happens if I make knots the same day that I wash my hair since I wash my hair at night and sometimes it isn't dry by the morning. But when I redo them throughout the week, I use a spray bottle with conditioner and water and it doesn't come out frizzy.

How many knots do you usually make? My hair is BSL and I usually make 8 or 9. Hope this helps.

I love knots & knot outs! My hair doesn't frizz up too much unless I can't keep my hands outta my hair. I use a heavy moisturizer like shea butter, cocoshealoe or ORS olive oil...I usually wear the knots for a few days before releasing them.

I did my daughter's bantu knots on natural 4a hair and there was NO frizz - for the first time in her entire life. I copied a portion of someone else's regimen for creating curls. When I can recall her name, I will edit and post it. (I can see her face but can't recall the name.)

What I did:

  • Wash
  • Condition. Rinse most of conditioner (Nexxus Humectress) becaus it can also be used as a leave-in.
  • Detangle in sections (choose the size you want).
  • To detangle, I used water, Infusium, a light hold gel (I used Isoplus styling gel - pre conditioning light), Neutrogena Silk Touch and detangled from root to tip. I started at the ends and worked my way up. The hair was DRENCHED in moisture, so much so that I could see her curl pattern really nicely. It was sopping wet. No breakage occurred while doing this.
  • Take the detangled strand and Bantu knot it, securing lightly with an Ouchless band.
  • Do entire head this way, one strand at a time instead of trying to detangle entire head and then knot. It's wet but worth it.
  • Sit under dryer for 1.5 hours. I did this for DD because she has really long hair and 1.5 hrs will not get it completely dry.
  • Take down next morning if your hair is not too damp still. Otherwise, rock the knots for a day. I think the actual knots are a beautiful style (Jada Pinkett-Smith in The Matrix)
You can look in my Fotki under DD's hair to see the end result. It was incredibly SOFT but with no frizz whatsoever. The soft hold gel eliminated the frizz and the sopping wet-to-dry set made it hold exceptionally well. No hardness anywhere. Maybe next time, I will do smaller sections.

This PS lasted for 8+ days. I can't recall now exactly how long I left it in her hair. I also re-knotted each night to keep it fresh looking, though I did not re-knot the last 2-3 days and it still looked pretty good.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Blessings,
Christi J.

I don't like mine with coconut oil...it's too light. I like my knot outs to be heavier and hang a little bit...so I use castor oil instead. Shea butter works as well. And make sure they're completely dry.

I also want to recommend a heavier oil like castor, especially if you're natural. I'm relaxed and I really only use coconut for shine and managebility not so much hold.
Go thicker.

i usually do bantu knot outs on hair that is a few days past being washed. I put Redken Smooth down butter treat + 2 spritzes of water on each section and then twist them up. Aloe vera gel helps with definition too if you just want to use that.
