How often is TOO often to have a relaxer applied?

Since I've been on the Biotin regimen, my hair seems to be growing out of control and it seems I need a retouch NOW, although it's only been 3-1/2 weeks.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

How about finding products to soften up the new growth, that way you would be able to stretch out the relaxer a bit longer (that way you won't have overprocessing).

My hair grows FAST (without vitamins too), on the third or fourth week, it always seem like overnight i received a growth spurt. If I relaxed my hair everytime i saw new growth, i probably wouldn't have any hair on my head now.

Just curious...what is your biotin regimen?

Hi Koko...

I take a 5mg of Biotin every morning... my multivitamins for women also has a small amount of Biotin.

I asked my natural foods instructionalist could you ever take too much Biotin, and she replied no. The body flushes out any overdoses of Biotin.

Yea, I've thought the same thing and I'm keeping my roots well creamed and shooting water on them while wet styling.

I don't know... I really don't want to go to the salon more than every 5 weeks.

Pray I make it to next Friday, ya'll! LOL!

hmmm.. i know of several people who relax every month. Not all of them have healthy hair, but some do (they have healthy hair practices in general). i would not personally resort to monthly relaxing but i'd say 6 weeks is good for your kind of growth, or maybe you may need to do it on the month mark this time.... I'm a firm believer in relaxing whenever i gain 1-1.5 inches of hair.. 4 weeks r 4 months.

So every 4 weeks is okay then?

I think that you should retouch no less than every 6 weeks. Eight weeks is even better for the health of your hair.

Thanks Jai! I'm going to try and stick with the 6 week thing!

Hi Blossom,
I retouch every 6 weeks or so (give or take a week) because by then I'm really needing one. I've been doing it for a few years now and haven't had a problem, so far. I kinda think it depends, some people can get away with retouching less often, and others are really hurtin' around the 6 week mark.

It has been reccomended that people who relax should get a touch-up every 4-8 weeks. I also believe anything less or more than that is a risk your taking with your hair

I would wait... One hairdresser informed me that they couldn't do it before six weeks... I would try to hold on to the new growth as long as possible. I know how you feel...I have lots of growth but I am trying to tame it down with products (on a mission to find some coconut oil...). Or try like the KMS FLAT OUT line or other product type relaxers that are not the real thing (chemicals). Also, are you taking vitamins that soften new growth (MSM, Evening Primrose oil)?

Think of the long range picture...what might look good in the summer now may look differently a year from now if you relaxed so often...sorry for the advice

just my 2 cents

Blossom, after thinking it over I would sday 4 weeks if you ABSOLUTELY cannot wait, but i would strongly suggest waiting at least 6 weeks.

This sounds like a good idea. I wish I knew how to soften my new growth a few years ago! I was an "every 8 weeks" girl.

Why is relaxing your hair at a 4 week mark bad if you have a ton of new growth and are only relaxing the new growth? Relaxers can be damaging, true, but how does frequency effect anything if the new growth is THERE?

Blossom, what kind of biotin are you taking?

I don't think there can be a set time for every person's hair. I do however know that for me, it is best to wait atleast 10 weeks.

When I was relaxing my own hair in college, I wasn't careful and as well informed as I am now, but I was relaxing my hair every month like clock work and I don't know if I was overlapping or not.

I'm suprised I have any hair right now at all.

It wasn't until I became educated on the proper way to relax that I started waiting longer, moisturizing the new growth and applying the relaxer only to the new growth. Because of this, I know see the once damaged hair at the nape of my neck growing in healthy(it's about 2 inches shorter then the rest of my hair and hasn't been relaxed for about 8 months). Also, the fine hair around my hairline has appeared from when I was little (the hair people call baby hair) and the hair at my temples is growing now too.

My hair is about 17" and didn't start keeping length until I stretched out the time between my relaxers.

Re: softening new growth

for me it's coconut oil applied to the new growth when wet...or liberally applying GPB conditioner to new growth and messaging it in (rinsing after 1 hour)

Re: softening new growth

WHERE CAN I GET COCONUT OIL AND DO I APPLY WHEN WET AND AIR DRY OR SIT UNDER A DOME DRYER

Re: softening new growth

It's best to use organic, I'm sure you can order it off the internet. I live in VA and just get mine from the local health food store.

after washing and conditioningI apply it to my new growth only...I don't really like it on my scalp, it has the tendency to melt and run... and I let it air dry. I usually wash my hair 2 or 3 times a week, I only apply the coconut oil once a week.
