I do a small self trim whenever I have an *attack of the little white balls* on the end of my strands. I get a regular trim at the stylist about once every 4 months (trying to make it longer by babying them).
A dusting is when you have the smallest amount of hair trimmed off of your ends. It looks like a small amount of hair on the floor...instead of a pile.

And what does 'dusting' your ends mean?

'Dusting' means looking for and cutting individual hairs that are split. The last time I had a trim was back in December and I'm about to get another next month. In between those times I 'dusted' my hair.
OK, because I get an 0.5/1 inch 'trimmed' off at each touch up (usually 6 weekly) and I think this is going to slow down any length i'm trying to achieve.
I didn't realise some people trimmed their hair every now and again.
The last time I trimmed was May 10, 2004 because my hair was really uneven. Before then, I would trim about 2-3 times a year! But now I'm taking up the "no trim challenge", so It'll probably be years before I trim again.
I used to only trim when I got my relaxer (which has been about every 19 weeks) but that has to stop and I will have to do them myself. My stylist had the nerve to trim 'just because' never once actually looking at the ends to see if they needed a trim, THEN cut my hair uneven. Noticibly UNEVEN UGH!
I now recieve a trim every other relaxer touch up. My ends are pretty healthy, and this schedule allows for some fairly significant hair growth.
My former stylist - the one to whom I would travel to CT - crazy I know - would shear me at every touch up. So, whatever growth I had attained would go virtually unnoticed.
I trim very rarely and I don't do it at regular intervals. the last time that I trimmed my hair was last year around October.
Although I did even up my hair in the back last time I rollerset it, but I don't consider that a "real trim" because I only did it for some symmetry... not because the ends were split.
When I was fully relaxed, I got my hair trimmed whenever I got my touch-ups which was every 2 months/10 weeks. I was using heat at least weekly and so I would get plenty of split ends. I liked my hair to be even and healthy looking so I was ok with getting trims.
Now that I'm transitioning, I hardly ever use heat and I haven't trimmed for 5 months. I will probably trim in the next few weeks to keep my hair even.

I trim as needed. No particular schedule.

Same here, I haven't had a trim since last July when my ends became fried and split badly from flat ironing once a week; thankfully I still haven't discovered any more split ends
