I have an appt., and to have my hair pressed w/marcel (sp) irons and/or hot comb is about $40. How much are you paying? Am I paying too much?

Well I'm not wearing weave I get a wash ,deep conditioned, press & bump and dead ends cut (when necessary) for 25$; 50$ for a perm

yes gurl. ur paying waaay too much. Well at a black private owned salon that price is okay, i guess. If you go to a salon chain like Hair Cuttery or JC Penneys or someplace like that. they charge 20 - $25 depending on the length of ur hair.

I paid $70 for a wash/press and trim,
I was ripped off, and I am never going back again.
Its because my hair is natural, and it was past my shoulders.
The lady was supposed to be of high caliber, but I have gotten the same treatment at a beauty school for $25.

Don't sleep on the beauty schools! I thought $40 was average, especially for someone with a lot of hair. I know people here who pay $50-$55 for their presses.

It might also depend on where you live. The least I've paid was 40 and the most was 70 (rip off). Either way, I don't pay for them anymore I just get jiggie with the maxiglide.

the least i paid was 30 without a treatment just conditioner and 40 with the treatment. anything over 40 i would say is too much.

okay, I feel a lil better. Thanks ladies. I have brastrap length hair, and $40+$5 tip really isn't too bad - plus my hair is on the thick side. I haven't been to a salon in a long time (while I was growing my hair out - ya know gotta stay away from the scissor happy stylists). Anyway, I went about 6 mos ago (to the same person I'm going to next week) and I was surprised at the cost - $40 seemed a bit much. However, she did a fabulous job, so I am going to her again.

I will eventually pull a kristina and get going with this here maxiglide:yep:

I am so sorry to hear about that. :(

I know that's right. Some beauticians act like they've never heard of a press n curl, don't want to do your hair and then charge an arm and a leg.

I used to pay 45 for a press in Boston, and now I pay 45 for a dominican blowout in Maryland. To me, its totally worth it because they get my hair how I like it with no lip and no damage.

I pay $50 everytime I get a wash, press, and curl. This also includes a minor dusting...even if I don't ask for it! :ohwell: I'm getting a deal compared to some of those L.A. ladies who pay upwards of $70....and my hair isn't relaxed!

I paid 55 for a press a while back at a black salon, not beauty shop, but salon. There's a difference. The salon charges more for the same thing. That press did not last me the whole day. By the end of the day I looked like Diana Ross! Fast forward, I went to another place in the hood of Houston. Her name is Mrs. Vera and she is an older lady and she does a wash and press for $25 dollars. Now her method is old school. She'll wash and condition you, put your hair in clips and put you under the dryer. When you are all dry, she'll remove the clips and put some type of light oil on your hair. I'm not sure what she put in but I'm very tender headed and it wasn't enough to make my hair smooth for the comb to throuh without hurting me some. But she'll gather up your hair and start from the back and move that hot ass comb through and in about 10-15 minutes, she's done. I was a little skeptical of her method because the comb was hot as hell and it felt like my hair was crackling when she moved it through but when she finished, that **** looked like I had a bone straight perm and in looking at it later, I remembered why I went natural. I hate my hair bone straight. But she got every inch and I didn't get a curl because I was gettting a trim later. It lasted two whole weeks until I washed it out!

She was done in under an hour flat! And she had other customers who I might add, had beautiful long permed hair. I'm going back to her to get my hair pressed for a wedding I'm in and I know she'll be done fast and I don't have to worry about being late to the ceremony.

A note, I tried pressing my hair myself many times, and always wondered why it would come out puffy and not have movement. One hairstylist told me it was because I was putting to much product in the hair. So I tried the same method Mrs. Vera did with my hair and the results were great. People thought I went and got my hair done. What I like about what I did was, it wasn't bone straight and it had lots of volume and movement. I used olive oil before I pressed and that was it.

Okay sorry for the long post...bye...lol

I've never been to a salon, but I know my mom paid $60 for a press at a dominican salon. She said she didn't like it very much because of their method. When she explained to me how they steamed your hair straight, I was like...that's how they're doing it these days? People can't learn how to do an old fashion press and curl?....geez

When you did it yourself, did you use a real pressing comb or a flat iron? :)

Anyway I have never had my hair pressed but I've paid anywhere from $20 to $85 for a blow out (the latter including a trim at a pricier salon and done by the owner/manager lady who did a so so job and isn't worth the price).:ohwell:

As of present times, I pay $55.00 when I go to the salon. Not to mention I have to go to Moreno Valley (I'm here in Cali). That is a lot for my hair to get pressed and it's no where near long not even shoulder length :ohwell: . But she's good and she's the only person who does my hair well. I was salon shopping when I first got here to Riverside and she's the only person I trust and am happy with.

A hot comb of course! Ain't no flat iron tough enough to flatten my God given naps!! I've tried it with a flat iron and it is just not going to cut it. I put the pressing comb on the stove and ran back and forth from the kitchen to the bathroom pressing my hair.

Ive never went to a JCP or HairCuttery salons Ive always gone to black owned and its been $20-25 for wash/set or press. Now for relaxers I pay $50 which is still kind of high to me but I hate putting it in myself because I never do it thoroghly (sp?)

I live in Moreno Valley as well. If you don't mind me asking, what salon do you go to?

I went to JC Penny twice for a press and the lady literally burned pieces of my hair off. I could hear it crackling while she was working but I ignored it. (I don't think she fully dried it before pressing). She didn't even bother to tell me that chunks of my hair were missing. Now I get chills just walking past JC Penny.

Depends where I go one stylists charged 25 the other 40. But i do it myself now when I actually do press.
