I literally almost cried last night when I detangled my hair....Since I have started my HHJ I have been doing all the neccesary things to help my hair... I cancelled out Heat TOTALLY I do hard protein treatments every six weeks DC every sunday with Nexxuss or 2 min keratin cowash atleast three times a week with herbal essences and protective styling all the way...Every time I do a protein treatment my hair does not shed like for two days but then it starts all over again....I recently posted a topic about this...my hair seems to not shed at all when I wear it straight !!! I am just lost what am I doing wrong???
Since I texlaxed I feel like its been a mistake I have so many different textures in my hair I dont know if that's what causing it...I have alot of new growth but I feel like I am not retaining!!!!

Is your hair texture very fine... maybe you are over-moisturizing with frequent cowashing... you may need to up your protein level... HTH

My hair texture is not that fine but I think you may be right...with the over-moisturizing....how would I go about upping my protein level?

It may be the difference in textures. I accidentally began texlaxing my hair (I switched to a mild relaxer and it would look straight with the relaxer on but texlaxed when I washed everything out). Anyway once I got to about 4 inches of the new texture i started losing balls of hair on wash day. Later I realized that the hair was breaking right where the straight hair meets the texturized part. I have upped my moisturizing and limited manipulation and that seems to help some but I still lose more hair than I would like when I wash my hair.

Are you having a problem with shedding or with breakage. They have different causes and solutions..

I literally almost cried last night when I detangled my hair. Are you detangling from the bottom up while using a product with slip to make the process easy on your hair?

I do hard protein treatments every six weeks Maybe you don't need to do this so often or maybe it doesn't need to be a hard protein

DC every sunday with Nexxuss or 2 min keratin That seems like a lot of protein in your reggie

cowash atleast three times a week with herbal essences Maybe this is too much manpulations or maybe your hair doesn't like cones

and protective styling all the way What type of protective style? Maybe you need to switch it up

Every time I do a protein treatment my hair does not shed like for two days but then it starts all over again. Your hair is supposed to shed everyday, nothing wrong with that

I recently posted a topic about this...my hair seems to not shed at all when I wear it straight !!! As in not in a protective style? If that works better for you than why not wear it that way?

I am just lost what am I doing wrong??? I'm lost too girl! I am sure you will get more responses once you clarify the problem.

I really wish I could get some clarity on this as well. But its hard to pinpoint my issue because I'm 3 months post partum, so I have a mix of regular shed, extra shed, and broken hairs. Last night was horrible. I washed, 2 min reconstructor, and DC'd. My hair was a tangled mess. :wallbash: DH came in the bathroom and saw the mounds of hair and asked.. "what's going on, you cut your hair" :nono:. All I had in hand was my denman.

IDk. I'm a little flustered right now too.

Thanks for taking the time to answer me:grin:

Are you detangling from the bottom up while using a product with slip to make the process easy on your hair? yeah I always detangle from the bottom and my hair is usually flooded with conditioner!

That seems like a lot of protein in your reggie...What other good conditioners are there without protein??

What type of protective style? Maybe you need to switch it up I wear loose buns and just pin them up!

As in not in a protective style? If that works better for you than why not wear it that way?
I hardly have time to do rollersets thats why I have jut been wetting and bunning!

So I used to get alot of shedding as well. I don't use heat at all but i feel like my hair sheds sooo much less when its straight. So here's what helped me.
First Alter ego garlic conditioner made my hair almost tooooo soft and helped stop shedding. its a little pricey so I always just buy the travel size.
I cowash with suave humectant conditioner every other day and only detangle under running water (detangling really well) I then dry with a t shirt and add some salerm leave in and either braid it in 4 or do some twist. that style can last for 2 days. (lets say i do it on sunday night it'll be good all monday and tuesday day and then I cowash on tues night) i do that for a week and the next week I wash do a roller set and let it air dry. I do it after dinner and sleep with it (pm for the secret to sleeping with grey rollers) i do the 2 min construction every time I wash so I guess once every 2 wks. I only do a hard protein a week before perm day... so i guess like every 2-3 months but I think 6 weeks is too often
But basically, you have to balence the moisture and the protein. Do a strand test- if it brittle and breaks too easily, the moisture is out of wack but if its stretchy it probably too much moisture... and herbal essance seems like a strange choice but i dk if it works for u!

When I was texlaxed I had similar issues which is why I decided to go natural. First off, difference in textures will make your break in places. Well it did mine. Also, wet bunning reeked havoc on my texlaxed hair, tho as a natural, it's my go to style. One thing I learned while being texlaxed was that the hair is a lot more fragile than natural hair, but you still have some of the same nuances of natural hair, i.e. tangles. U have to be really careful and gentle with texlaxed hair. For me, it's just easier to be natural. I would suggest you wear more low/no manipulton styles: braidouts, twistouts, rollersets, wash-n-gos (if U can do this with minimal manip)--but no wet buns! For me, the fact that my wet buns would remain damp all day, would never fully dry--that frazzled the heck out of my ends.

Have you noticed any increased shedding post partum?

Nope, not yet. I've been biting my nails anticipating that happening, but so far nothing! A friend of mine said she didn't have major post pardom shedding. I'm hoping I will be just as lucky!

Shedding is normal and happens everyday so don't get tooupset about it. Your hair is not shedding less just because it's straight. You are just not noticing it.

Random story...when I wore my hair straight I never got that much hair in the comb, but I did always find hair other random places like my sweater or pillowcase. And when I was in high school I'd come home and realize I had other people's shed hair (it was blonde, brown, etc.) on my clothing.

When the hair is straight it's much easier for it to just fall from the head because it's not being hindered by curls and getting stuck. It's not that you stop shedding or shed less, just that you don't notice it because it's falling out of your head and landing somewhere else. Especially if you comb or play with your hair during the day.

In my case, I always wear my hair curly. So if I don't detangle for a couple weeks it looks like I shed a whole bunch of hair that day. In reality, the shed hair was just stuck in the rest of my hair and couldn't be released until I used my fingers to really get it out.

I am newly texlaxed myself and I use a mild protein on my hair twice a week. I sometimes alternate it with Mizani Fulfyl which is a moisture/protein treatment and quite mild so it will not cause hard breaking hair. I often add some extra moisture in the protein conditioner to keep the moisture and protein balanced. Ultra Sheen Duo Tek is awesome and I use that once weekly too. I am not having an unusual amount of breakage but then again, I am an avid protective styler when my hair passes 6 weeks post relaxer. Low to no manipulation is helping me retain my hair a great deal. HTH.

Teja, I was confused about this reaction with my hair too. I found that my hair did better...or seemed to when I lightly blow-dried and flat-ironed. I jumped on the rollersetting bandwagon for a while but noticed more breakage that way. I finally decided that rollersetting is too much manipulation for ME...Macherieamour's technique doesn't work for everyone...and I think for me, the slight heat (275-350) seems to melt the oil and protein into my hair sealing it somehow.

Also, what helped me is clarifying. Supergirl talks about this a lot and it works for me. Too much protein is no good....it can cause hair breakage. It bascially is thickening up the hair to make it stronger, but it also makes it hard and brittle so that it can snap. I've learned to ERR ON THE SIDE OF MOISTURE and do light protein (ORS Replenish) when my hair gets like that. HTH.

With my first child I had locs. My hair line thinned and my locs began to look a little on the skinny side by the time she was 7 months old. In a pic I have when she was 8 weeks, my hair was really full. Now this time around, I am seeing the hairs shed and once again my hairline in the front(center area) has thinned as well. I'm just hoping this doesn't last long.
