I know its a no-no but....I'm sorry my hair does not lay flat with a wide-tooth comb...how do you ladies manage?? Is throwing the brush away ESSENTIAL to hair retention??? :)

Brushes can do some real damage. If you feel that you need to brush your hair, try using a really soft brush.

I brush my hair with a hard brush once an a while. Actually only one time for this whole year. I wanted my "fake" ( my hair doesn't really puff right because it lies down instead of puffing out) puff to look extra pretty.

Other than those few times I don't even touch a brush.

I'm 13 weeks post-relaxer and I'm still wearing a bun. I took down my kinky twist on Saturday (after only two weeks, another story) and I was really scurred that my hair wouldn't look right today because the new growth looked fierce. But my trusty old boar bristle brush saved the day :D . There is NO way I could put my 4a/b/z hair in a decent bun without a brush. I don't know how other ladies do it.

When I was wearing my hair in a puff every day I used a boar bristle brush to smooth my hair down in the front. I didn't have any problems. Use a soft brush and be gentle and it shouldn't cause breakage. You should also make sure you aren't pulling your hair back too tight. I personally think that causes more problems than the usage of a brush.

I agree 100%. I brush my hair every morning and night with a soft boar brush. The problems I am having is the pulling of my hair trying to put it up in a phony ponytail. I stopped wearing the phony ponytail because the pulling of my hair couldn't take it, my sides were thinning and it wasn't because of the brush.

I lose less hair with my soft brush than I do when I comb through my hair. I think it all depends on the brush, your hair, how tightly you pull it and how roughly you brush it. But it's totally possible to have healthy hair and brush regularly.

Besides, some women swear by not combing hair and only brushing. :drunk:
So I guess the only way to know for sure is to test it on yourself. :)

I brush my hair to pull it back into a ponytail or bun. I only do the front part of my hair to smooth it down.

Using a fine tooth comb works just a well as a brush for smoothing hair. Give it a try. Don't pull it..make sure the hair is untangled and only using it for smoothing the front to the bun/ponytail - not the actual length.

Hairlove, i dont think using a fine tooth comb works for some of us, especially when you're stretching out that relaxer and it's just starting to look bad!!!

for me personally, after a while, my hair just looks nasty lol, i'm combing and it STILL does not look right and i dont wanna get all down close to the scalp and i'd rather have the top part looking smooth and move on till the next wash or co-wash.

i almost brushed yesterday, i was SO tempted! i haven't brushed in a few months. But I really want to buy a brush. Everytime i'm tempted, i pick up the brush and run it on the back of my hand, it feels HARSH! so i'm like 'imagine what it would to to my head'...

is it Ok to buy a brush as soft as the baby brushes??? i woudn't do vigorous brushing, just once in a while to put the top strands in place and make it look decent.

:look: ummm....I've been using a toothbrush and gel to lay down my edges. The results are in the September update of my Fotki.

I was going to share the results in a thread but after the monestat debaucle, I just decided to keep it to myself.

If anyone finds it helpful, glad that I can help.
