for those who do, plese share with me your routine. Also, please answer if you press or flat iron it yourself or do you reguarly frequent a salon? I ask because the popular thought is that one can only achieve length if one obtains a perm.

that popular thought just aint so.

I ve been natural for almost 11 years and press my hair, i used to go to my hairdresser to get it done whenever i wanted a press. but after time and practice ive learned to do it on my own. the best product i found for pressing is now discontinued though.

Ultra Sheen's Satin Creme Press lotion. ive got a little stash of it though (thanks again to the angel that sent me some) but before i found that, oils helped to hold a press, like olive oil, coconut oil etc. but im still going to be trying the Satin Creme Press pomade for my next press...

Re: how many of you press your hair to straighten

I'm another one who presses when I want straight styles. I've always just used a pressing comb. I wouldn't even know how to flat iron. And I've always done it myself.

I don't have much of a routine. I will just wash and condition my hair like normal. Then I braid my hair in a bunch of sections, applying some creamy hair dressing to each section. I let my hair dry overnight. Then I unbraid a section, part the hair into smaller sections, then press each section, applying the hot comb from the root to the tip of the hair, while at the same time using a piece of cloth in my other hand to press the hair and hot comb against.

I'll maybe apply a little more hair dressing as I go. It takes me a couple hours to do my whole head.

I haven't found any products that I absolutely love or that seem to help my pressed hair resist moisture. I currently either just use Liv or Mango Butter. I like them both, but I'm open to trying something else.

I swear I'm gonna get me a Fotoki account one of these days. Hey, is this the pomade that you are talking about: http://www.ebonyline.com/21814.html

Re: how many of you press your hair to straighten

thanks for the replies. I now have another question; have any you who press your hair, also used Surge? I ask because as the formula 14 leaves the scalp wet, it in effect reverses your "press" at the roots!!

I typically use WGO to press my own hair because it allows me to press with ease. I am interested in learning to use the flat iron, since this is touted as a way to use less heat.

My 4a/4b hair grows but it also breaks off. Thus the back in much longer than the top and sides. In the past I've been told I should get a perm in order to maintain the growth!!

Hey Nay,

Iris is talking about the lotion version of that. She says the lotion version is less greasy than the stuff that is in the jar.

i use a flatiron to get my hair straight. instead of using grease i use breakthru heat styling creme which works really good. it leaves your hair moisturized without making it feel greasy.
