hair goal? My question is after you wear your hair up for so long to protect your ends and it finally reaches it's goal, do you wear your hair out any more often than you do while it's in "growth mode"? Just curious. I'm a daily bun wearer and very close to my personal hair goal!

I would recommend keeping your ends protected and moisturized. Your biggest enemy with losing length as far as dryness is the air. You can wear it down 2-3 days out of the week if you want, but if you want to keep the length, protect the ends from air.

I think one of the main things is keeping hair moisturized and not manipulating too much or using heat. I think braidouts/twist outs are still semi-protective, especially if they dont touch your clothes. For example I wear a lot of tank tops, etc in the summer and when my hair is out it doesnt get rubbed against my clothes causing more dryness and split ends. I think that completely protective styles are probably best, but using gentle care, constant moisture and no/minimal heat is definitely helpful in retaining length.

I have a problem with wearing my hair up bc I have a big head, but I guess it just takes getting using to. Im going to try to start wearing it up about half the time though, and all the time when Im around the house. Im going to buy some cute hair accessories so it wont be so plain and boring. In this FL humidity, it just turns into a fro when I go outside anyway!:) But u know Im hardheaded and call myself looking cute...lol.

I think I am in the minority on this but once you reach your goal I honestly don't see the point in still consciously wearing your hair up. I don't think that all of a sudden your length is going to "magically" disappear because its rubbing against something or exposed to "harmful" air. As long as you take care of your hair I don't think this is going to happen. I have plenty of friends who have VERY long hair and NEVER wear it up. Only just just throw it in a ponytail on a bad hair day. And if I actually reach my goal I won't wear my hair up either. I don't wear it up now and its growing so I don't really see the point in saying you still have to wear protective styles most of the time to keep your length. I just don't think that is true if you are taking steps to take care of it, your hair will be healthy and grow protective styles or not. And I'll be damned if I reach my goal and then wear it up in a granny bun most of the time. Heck No!

Same here!!!

...But I have started the daily bun wearing last week, keeping my hair moisturized most of the time, and I have gotten rid of using heat.
I think after I reach my short term goal (between shoulder blade length in December 2004), I will probably wear my hair down more. My latter goal is for brastrap length by mid-2005. I cant wait to see results of retained length in the future!

I've reached my first goal several times, but then got careless and started playing in my hair. Had to put it all up all over again due to damage from hot irons.

I agree with you about taking good care of your hair to achieve your goals but the the point of wearing buns or any other protective style is to retain more length. If you wear your hair down most of the time, it has the potential to stay the same length of the months or years of having your hair because it isn't as protected. I hope thats clear.

Re: How many bun wearers have actually reached the

I wear my hair in two french braids in the summer months. I'm spreading my relaxer out for 12 weeks (for the first time). This seems like this is the only way I can wear my hair because of the new growth. I tried to wear buns but it seems like my ends just snap and break every time I try this method. I'm trying to grow out this damaged no-lye hair of mine and this might be the reason for the quick-to-break-damaged-ends. But I'm getting it under control.

Yes I understand that but once I reach my goal I don't want my hair any longer than bra strap so if I wear it down and it doesn't grow any longer than that then I won't care because I don't want it too. As long as my hair is healthy and I'm happy with my length I don't see a reason to wear it up.

I'm with you Wolftrap!
I wear protective styles to get to my goal but once I am there I think the protective styles will mainly be when I am 8 weeks post relaxer and/or having a bad hair day. As long as I can continue to avoid too much heat then it is gonna be out and about!

Now I understand what you're really tryin to day. I think when I finally reach brastrap I will feel the same way about wearing my hair down instead of up. I would wanna show off my length!

two french braids worked for me when I had new growth before my relaxer touchup I got last Sunday. Hmmm....I plan on waiting to relax next time in Sept or Oct so if I cant get my hair inna bun, Ill do this french braid method again.

Re: How many bun wearers have actually reached the

I am close to my goal. I have 5 more inches until I reach waist length. Wearing my hair in a bun really helps to keep my hair moisturized. I am also using no heat. I'm going to have my hair flat ironed for Christmas. Thats going to be my Christmas gift when I see how much my hair has grown. Hopefully I'll be at waist length

Re: How many bun wearers have actually reached the

Ive reached my first goal of brastrap wearing buns but when I reach my ultimate goal, I will still wear buns, just not as much, plus I think that all the moisturizing I will be doing (unlike in the past) will make a difference in enabling me to wear my hair down sometimes after my next goal has been reached without worrying about loosing length. Many things are being done differently now, so eventually limiting my bun wearing couldnt possibly mess things up...I dont think.

Me and you both ADB! I'm also expecting for my hair to be waist length in December. I'm also a little past bra strap now. Let's make it there together. I have about 3 inches left to waist length, so I guess I'm a little bit shorter than you...

About buns: I'm trying to wear a bun everyday for 2 months and then I'll let you guys know what I think.

Re: How many bun wearers have actually reached the

Ok FlowerHair, We can encourage each other
smile.gif
! I wear a bun everyday except Saturday and Sunday. My ends haven't been crispy since I've been moisturizing them and wrapping them in a bun, and I've also been retaining a lot of length. Oh yea when I do reach my goal I will wear my hair down more often. If I'm not going anywhere special I'll probly just keep it in a bun.

I expect to reach my goal sometime this year, but I'll throw in my opinion here anyway. I wear my hair rollerset straight during the first 2-4 weeks after a touchup and for special events. Styles: down and loose, in 2 braids, in a ponytail secured by a hair claw (NOT an elastic), or twisted up in a hair claw such that the ends flare behind my head or stick straight up.

Then until the next touchup, I wear the bun mostly. I'll probably continue with this after I'm braclasp length, cuz the new growth messes up rollersets after week 4 and I get exasperated with styling.

do u moisturize your hair before putting it inna bun? Do u avoid putting your bun too tight?

i'm three inches from reaching my goal. wearing a bun really does work

Minnie,

How long where you in the bun? How long was your hair when you started bunning?

my hair is past my bra strap and i still wear my hair in buns. [i started wearing buns out of laziness and uncreativity, not as part of a challenge or to reach a goal.] it does not make sense to me to stop wearing buns now just b/c my hair has reached a certain length. would you revert to your old eating habits after losing a certain amount of weight? seems to me like the same concept would apply to your hair. just my 2 cents...
