Well for me the question was how long does my hair need to be before I can bun comfortably?
The answer, still not there yet for wet hair. Stretched hair I can do a bun that doesn't have to be done super tight to stay in. My hair ranges from just touching nape length to APL.
Basically, it's whenever you're comfortable. I just do a regular bun, I'm not very creative.
If your hair is too short it can do more damage than good when it comes to bunning. So I will say wait until your hair grows out a little bit more so you can bun safely
I had neck length hair and I was bunning-with fake hair. I just created a braid with loose bulk braiding hair and used a medium sized claw clip to attach it to my hair. I then wrapped that into a bun. There was zero stress on my own hair, and it looked perfectly natural. Or you can just buy a pre-made fake bun. Get creative!
It depends on the type of bun. I was able to do something like this at a shorter length (video tutorial in siggy). You need enough hair to make a puff and be able to fold it over the sides and pin it.
I couldn't do this type of bun until I got to around 11" stretched:
Im just now able to put my hair into my phony bun without my ends peeking out, and I'm just at SL. My phony bun is really small though. Use the small foam donut with bulk hair wrapped around it. I pull my own hair through and tuck the ends
i know i would have to wait a whole year, before i can put my hair into a bun safely. i have serious shrinkage and my coils are tight. i wouldn't want to damage my hair.
I know what you mean. After a year of transition the BC, i had hair but not enough. Now 3 months later I can get it pulled back when wet or damp.
I think its based on how thick your hair is as well as lenght as a natural.
But Im not risking damaging the front of my hair so Im being patient. Gona be rocking my hair into some cornrows this summer with the odd leaving it out to play session.
Good luck and good patience.
I have been growing for 2.5 years and my hair is 12 inches and just about APL. I can do one of those fold over buns where you just don't pull the ponytail through all the way. I have been able to do one of these for a few months but it is too small to really be a cute hairstyle. I also do a bun similiar to Mwedzi's except a put my hair in a puff and then just gather the ends all together and pin it under. This makes a nice big bun and I have been able to do this for about 2 months.
I am finally able to do a bun now, but in the past I had a hard time due to annoying layers in my hair. The back was fine, but the middle was too short to wrap around.
A great alternative is a donut. You can get them at Sally's for like $3 bucks. Here is a picture of me with the sponge "donut" which helped me create a bun.
