to get a touchup (relaxer) after you get your hair color and what preventive measures do you take to keep the damage to a minimal?

I would say wait about four weeks. Others can comment on what products to use though.

ETA: Keeping it moisturized and deep conditioning is a big YES!

4 weeks is a good time to wait inbetween treatments and you can do a hardcore protein treatment like Nexxus Emergencee to strengthen your hair in the mean time, you should also do light protein treatments and alternate with moisturizing treatments.
