How important is a hair-STYLE?????

My hair has no style. Sure, it naturally grows in layers, but some are uneven and I feel like it just sits there in curls.

Is it worth cutting my hair to get a real style that may or may/not be easier to keep looking neat? (check my album if you need to ;) )

My hair is in layers too. I think that trying too much to "style" it is what has gotten me in trouble in the past. I am still growing out the layers from one of those uneven Salt-N-Peppa cuts I got when I must have been around 10 years old! I feel that most AA takes a long time to grow out the patterns from styles, as least mine does, so I just let it be. Anyhoo, if you are following the bun or the baggie challenge or using protective styles a style really is not that important. My hair is always up. However, if you are wearing your hair out, I understand why a style would be important to you. One book that I read said that I style should not take too much to maintain and if I were to go for a style, I would look for one that would work with minimal heat, because my hair can't take too much heat.

Your hair is beautiful. :) Picture #9 in the "October '04" album is fabulous, and in #17, it looks as though your hair is actually cut in a nice style, to me. It looks like you can do a lot with your hair the way it is now. :)

For the past several years, I've preferred keeping my hair long and either U-shaped or blunt. So, that's not much of a 'true style' as far as haircuts go. But I do different hairdo's that, to me, are stylish.

For instance, if I want to wear a roller set style, I'll use smaller Caruso rollers or Bantu knots on top, and larger ones on the bottom. I might use three different sizes. This gives the appearance of a layered haircut.

I like experimenting -- straight styles, wavy wash-and-go, buns, rolls, freeform upsweeps, French braids, two 'stacked' ponytails, etc. I like 'half up-half down' styles, done in numerous ways with my hair straight or curly. Non of theses things are complicated or take long to do, yet they offer versatility without having a precise haircut, which could limit my hairstyling options.

I went through a period where I got 'real' haircuts, but couldn't do much with my hair afterwards. This was especially true when I would ask stylists to give me "long layers," but they would always do the same thing - make the top part way too short while the bottom was still long. So, the layers never blended correctly and I couldn't wear my hair straight without it looking undone, or wear my hair up without using lots of gel or grease. It was awful.

That is what makes me hesitant to have a stylist give me a 'real' cut again.

DON'T DO IT KRYS!

If your goal is long hair, cutting it in a "style" will just hold up your progress. Your hair looks fine as is and once your hair gets longer it won't matter that it's not cut into a style. :)
