Dayjoy Sometimes I dampen, other times, I don't! I don't understand HOW it works, but pre-pooing on dirty hair works very well for me. I've been using Vatika lately. I highly recommend it if you haven't tried a pre-poo before.

man, that vatika stuff...ive been able to avoid wanting to try it for years, yet of course...now everyone's talking about how great it is again and im like "hmmmmm"

regular coconut oil is not my friend...but i might give the vatika a whirl.

I do it overnight or under the dryer with oils, honey and some kind of conditioner or hair mask on my new growth...it make my new growth so straight after washing, like I've gotten a relaxer...I'm currently transitioning but have always been a stretcher, if I hadn't started doing prepoos earlier this year I know I wouldn't have decided to transition

Eta: and I roller set at every wash and flat iron my new growth...my breakage is almost non existent...from start to finish now I get less breakage then I did before from just the shampoo/condition part

Dayjoy I dampen with water before applying my pre-pooas well. Whether its oils, conditioner or both. It seems to help it penetrate better. Not sure why that is, but it just works. And yeah I think it does work on dirty hair, I can tell the difference when I don't pre-poo.

Thanks ladies. I will be prepooing from now on. I'll do it for DD too.

After prepooing is everyone using actual shampoo or does anyone cowash after and with no shampoo?

Except for when I DC with GPB on dry hair, pre-pooing did nothing for my hair. I tried oils and ended up with hard hair that was just a mess to wash. :barf: My hair feels soft and moisturized if I DC with GPB and the directions say to apply it before shampooing so in a way it's a pre-poo. The only pre-poo I ever do.

Pre-pooing didn't do anything special for my hair. I do detangle with conditioner now before I shampoo, so I guess that counts. I've also started DC ing before I shampoo, and then using my conditioner as a leave in. It just makes the wash process faster.

Prepooing is one thing I will never be without. I lightly spray a section of hair with water, work it in a bit, then work EVCO into my hair and scalp. I cover with a plastic bag then a towel - the water and heat create a greenhouse effect and my hair feels very soft and moisturized after. Benefits:

Moisture & softness: Oil, along with water, have been the key to moisturized, soft hair for me. EVCO absorbs into the hair strand, and it's made my hair look great in the short term, and has made it healthy in the long term. It helps the hair to retain protein, which when balanced, helps retain moisture. Just using these few simple ingredients, rather than all the conditioners, etc, has gotten my hair out of the build-up/wash out cycle and leaves it soft, clean, and moisturized.

Coating the hair with oil or conditioner before shampooing helps the hair from being dried out by the washing process.

Cleansing: Oils have cleansing properties- oil breaks down oil. Olive Oil is one of the best cleansing oils- it's great at removing heavy waxes, emulsifiers, shea butter, etc. When you wash it out, it takes the gunk out with it. For a deep cleansing/deep moisture treatment, I use EVOO & EVCO as my prepoo.

Time: Once I started using the mudwash, I didn't need to DC. I found that an oil prepoo, washing, and my shea mixture as a leave-in are all I need. "DCing" before washing is more convenient for me b/c I don't have to get back in the shower.

I think whether it works for you depends on your hair's needs and what works best for your schedule. Some do it all the time, some do it as an occasional treatment.
