How far above the split end do you cut?

1/2 inch? 1/4 of an inch? I remember reading somewhere that it is important to cut a certain length above the split end. I did a search and didn't find anything.

Also, is there a difference between $9.99 shears and $19.99 shears? Where & how much did you pay for yours?

She suggests trimming the split 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch above the damaged area.
