How Do you start a french braid?

I am a little confused at where to start it. I have been practicing how to do a french braid and I am so close at getting it. The top of my braid is still not right. The rest is pretty good. Can someone please give me some tips?

The trick seems to be to gather your hair like you were going to do a half up half down style (as a pony that pulls the front sides and crown back, separate into three sections and start a braid (two twists) then start to gather the sides and work your way down. The two braids at the top keeps it from bulking up at the crown (I'm sure the tutorials will model this). Good Luck and don't forget to show us here!
