lately I feel like my hair is getting a little bit on the dry side. I am in search for the perfect moisturizer for my hair. Any suggestions? :ohwell:

I start from the inside. Good food, lots of water to drink, and a daily multivitiman. In addition, I rinse my hair almost daily. In the summer it's daily. When my hair feels a little "crunchy" to me it's time for a clarifying wash. I will use a vinegar/water mix, or lemon juice/water mix. I rub the hair/scalp really well. Then I will use my oyin poo bar, and let teh bubbles sit on my head for 2-3 min. I will then follow up w/ a really good deep conditioner. I will let it sit all day if I can, but if I am in a hurry, it stayes on for about 5-10 min while I am in the shower. I will then add only a little jojoba oil or shea butter melted to wet, detangled hair and let it air dry. That seems to do the trick every time. For me, dryness is usually a build up since I mainly no poo, and I need a clarifying wash

First, I try to keep it moisturized - castor oil at night, some nights I cover it with plastic cap

Or, I'll do conditioner wash, seal with oil

This is very good advice!!

Me personally the only moisturizer that works on my hair is UBH Lotion Creme. If I try to use any other moisturizer my hair doesn't respond to it. Try using a few different mositurizers & find one that suits you well. HTH....

I really like ORS Olive oil in a jar on my ends and misting my hair with water and leave-in before I go to bed. I heard good things about Jane Carters moisturizers as well :)

What I just recently did was mix one of my fav conditioners, some water, and some oil with water and added it to a spray bottle. The results are lovely. Moisturized soft hair. I wonder what took me so long to do this.

This is what I normally do as well! It especially works well if you are wearing your hair in protective styles. I use distilled water, conditioner (protein mixed with a moisturising conditioner), and a little oil.

For those of you who are making your own moisturizer (water, conditioner, oil) - what am I doing wrong? When I spray it on my hair, it turns white... and just sits there. It makes my hair look like it needs to be washed. I have a small spray bottle, I put over half distilled water, a little oil, and conditioner. Does yours look white and thick when you spray it on. I've tried it with 3 different conditioners.

Mines look white and thick because I want it too. It's like a really creamy conditioner in a spray bottle (except it's a little more watery)

At first when I made it it was really watery, me not likey that! But I see that's what you want so I would advise this: Anyways, trying putting more water, less conditioner, and less oil! I would do 70-80-% water and a few drops of oil and only a little bit on conditioner. Nomore than 2 capfuls.

Hi Liv4life9,
I never really understood the protein/moisture balance but thanks to Sistaslick I finally get it! The first thread on this forum has a detailed thread by Sistaslick on this topic. I now alternate between protein and moisturising cleansing and conditioner products.

On a daily basis I moisturise my hair with a little ORS Olive Oil a water-based moisturiser, then Shea Butter and Emu Oil to seal in the moisture. My hair now feels strong and moisturised without feeling heavy, coated or greasy.

me too

Thanks Mizanimami, I'll try the watery method and see if it works for me. I don't like all that white caked up look on my hair.

UBH Moisturizer is the only one that works for me too, I love this product.

I will give this a try as soon as I go back to my buns and braid out. Thanks for the info!

I forgot to ask....how much of each product are you mixing. I would think about equals amounts and less oil but just wanted to ask to be sure.

I have no exact measurements but I would say:

(in an 8 ounce bottle)

5 pumps of humectress (about 5 tablespoons)
2 pumps of keraphix (about 2 table spoons)
4-5 ounces of water
1 capful of coconut oil
2 capfuls of castor oil

If you want a more watery mix I would add about 85% water first! Because the conditioner+oil+shaking will naturally thicken it up.

Thanks for the advice. By the way, where do you purchase emu oil? I am very interested in trying that as I have heard sooooo many good things about it.
