Not sure if this has been asked, but how do you know when your hair is straight to your liking while relaxing? I did a test patch with revlon no mix no lye regular, boy was I glad I did that. I left it in for about twenty, I kept smoothing it, I assumed it was straight, it felt slick with the perm in it, after rinsing and porosity control, it was still "textured" and not to silky smooth, with move more wave than I care for. I put very little oil in the relaxer so I dont know, am I just not finding a winner relaxer, or I cant pickup when the hair is fully processed! Thank goodness I didnt do this to my whole head as I am already underprocessed. Underprocessed hair is a drag as many of us have found out...opinions appreciated.

I think I read this somewhere in shamboosie's book but I'm not sure. you can tell when the relaxer is done processing by smoothing it. when your smoothing the relaxer through the hair and it doesn't come back up, it just lays down. that's how you know it's done. he says that most people smooth the relaxer because they think it is help ing the hair to get straight, but it's really just to let you know when It's done relaxing. I don't know if that made any sense, but I hope it helps.

here it is, in shamboosie's book , beautiful black hair, on pg 162 he says....

"smoothing is not done to straighten the hair or to help the straightening process. It is only used to help you determine if the hair is completely relaxed.

when the hair is properly relaxed, it will lay down on the scalp. if the hair is not properly relaxed, it will rise up slightly off the scalp as you smooth. when the hair is relaxed, it will feel silky and very soft to the touch. if it feels hard to the touch when it's time to remove the chemical, give it one or two more minutes."
