How do you know if you have hard water?

I'm beginning to think this is playing a big part in my hard hair problem...

For me my hair was brittle and dry and breaking. I never had that problem until I moved back home to PA. I also never had a problem with relaxers till then. Then one day after crying to my cousin about my problems with my hair she told me it was the hard water(and chlorine). You can also call the water company(I asked my brother, who happens to work for the water company and he backed up my what my cousin said) ...plus my skin always had this film on it..even after I showered. I now have a shower filter(my skin is loving this)...although I lately I've been shampooing with distilled water. Try using this the next couple of times you shampoo and rinse. You will be able to tell almost immediately.

Hard water may be my problem with dry hair and skin. So, today after work I went and bought a culligan shower filter, only cost 18.00. I hope this will help. I will follow up with the results. Thanks for the tip. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Another way to tell is if you leave water in a glass if it leaves residue or a white like film on glass when the water dries. I ALWAYS filter my drinking water and didn't even think about my hair....hmmmmmmm
Being the PJ that I am I MAY be out buying one too. Unfiltered water here has a nasty taste as well! Let me know what you uncover!

Does hard water leave an orange residue or a white residue? I have well water and have always heard that we have hard water and it has a lot of iron in it so it leaves an orange/rust colored residue.

Well water is very hard. Besides the iron it has lots of other minerals. That was worse for my hair than the highly chlorinated water is. I noticed a slight improvement when I moved to a house without a well....but not much. That's why I ended up buying a shower filter(cause I rent). If I still owned my house I have a filter system installed.

Adding a shower filter to my "To Buy" list. Cuz I won't even drink my tap water AT ALL. I keep bottled water in the fridge. *sigh*

Tea, a friend of mine had a water sofftener added to her home by this company that maintained it and added extra softener as needed for a small monthly fee. If you like I can see if that company has a PA branch.

Same here! I have a Pur filter on the kitchen sink and never thought about the water coming out of my shower. /images/graemlins/confused.gif
A friend of mine got me a Culligan filter for the shower. You can put it on without tools just like the filters for the sink. I think he got it from Lowe's or Home Depot...
I haven't washed my hair yet, but I can see a difference after taking a shower. I didn't need to use a tub of lotion to moisturize my skin!
