How do I stop combing my hair?

I have found as my hair is slowly getting longer and I get better at taking care of it my curl definition is great. Perhaps too great. I detangle usually before I shampoo with a conditioner mix (I do shampoo in sections). And after my DC I HAVE to detangle again to separate/part my hair to get it in the style (like mini-twists, braids whatever) I want to dry because my hair just clings to itself. I don't like detangling that last time because I know it's not good for my hair (my hair pops and I know that's my strands breaking).

Any pointers?

I have the same situation. I find it best to wrap my hair in a t-shirt or turbie twist to get all the moisture out, put a light moisturizer and serum in my hair, wrap it in a loose bun and let it air dry to about 80% dry, then finger part into small sections to apply my moisturizer again to soften my hair (especially around my new growth where it tends to snap) before I gently detangle from the ends up. It's very time consuming, but it makes a HUGE difference in how much hair I lose to detangling. I learned the hard way last week; I felt lazy and tried to detangle my mostly dry hair without re-applying my moisturizer, and I lost FIVE TIMES as much hair as I did this week when I stuck to the regimen...oh well, you live and learn. :perplexed

I don't know. I rarely use a comb anymore.

I remember reading about natural ladies saying they never used a comb and I thought they were fronting. lol Now that I'm natural, I may go three weeks and my hair never see a comb. I only comb if I'm flat ironing. Other than that, I've learned to detangle with my fingers. I detangle as I apply my leave in and product if needed.

I rarely use a comb on my 6 yr old DD hair either. It just makes it easier and I find that combs are very anti-retention for our hair.

koolkittychick ah so it's just something I have to deal with then. Gotta remember that extra moisturizer step.

I am in awe at naturals who finger detangle.
Every now and again I finger detangle. But I excessively shed (PCOS) so I know that it won't get all of the shed strands out.

Like I finger detangled when I took my braids out yesterday vs using a comb and it made the actually detangling process easier.
