..... title says it all

(i'm asking this because according to past threads, Affirm doesnt seem to be the right choice for fine haired ladies... and I was considering that relaxer)

i read something on here like if you put your hair into a ponytail and measure
  • thick = more than 1"
  • thin = less than 1"
not sure if they were talking about the diameter or the circumference.... I just already know my hair is thin

HTH

I read in a magazine that if you pull your hair back in a ponytail, if the size of the ponytail is equal to the size of a quarter then your hair is thick. If it's the size of a dime it's thin. I guess anything between the two would be medium or average thickness.

I say my hair is fine because of the diameter of my strands... my hair is kinda wispy and doesn't have much weight.

However when i put my hair in a ponytail its not tradiitonally thin or fine... but its far from thick

is this when the hair is relaxed or in it's natural state? Wouldn't pretty much everyone here have thick hair if it's in its natural state? This is a little confusing for me :lachen:

I think 'thick vs fine' hair refers to the diameter of single strands of hair. I read that if a strand of hair is smaller that a thread then it is fine, if it is thicker than a thread then it is thick. A person can have thick hairs, yet their hair can still be thin; and likewise, a person with fine hair can have a 'thick' head of hair- I think that's where the confusion comes in.

As an example, my grandmother has 'fine' hair. But, her hair appears thick because she has a lot of strands on her head.
Also, fine hair cannot tolerate a lot of product because it weighs it down- that's another way to tell.

Using your logic i would then guess that I have fine hair but since I have a lot of it its thick. Can anyone tell by my sig???

You definitely have a lot of hair! I've been admiring it for some time now  ......kinda hard to tell if it's fine or not though from the siggy pic.:)

Are the categories:

diameter of one strand: fine v. medium v. coarse?

and

# of strands on head: thin v. medium/normal v. thick?

Cuz I get all confused

The dime v. quarter comparison for the ponytail size makes sense, though.

Aww thanks! Your hair is definitely on point though. Very lush and thick looking

I've heard of this too. I measure while I am wearing a rubberband since clips automatically extend the width of your hair.

Not really. I'm natural but my hair is fine and my ponytail still isn't wider than a dime if I gel it all back into one. I mean a ponytail not a puff. If I gel all my hair back into a ponytail like you would with relaxed hair (like when I clip my phony pony on) its maybe the size of a golf ball if that. Your hair is probably just thick. I wish mines was. :ohwell:

I've heard that before too but I think that's density. Like some people can have thin strands but have a lot of them. My hair is fine (the strands are thin) and I don't have that many of them. For every 1 strand of hair on my head a thick haired person might have 3 or 4 strands. You can really see it when my hair is straight.

OT: I love your hair! It has really grown a lot in a short period of time.

I know my hair is fine based of my texture: its not coarse or medium & it feel like "white" ppl hair: just curly so the girls on the board told me my hair is fine

You got me all confused gal  Looking at your sig, your hair looks thick!!! But it isnt?

Girl no lol Don't let that puff fool you. It just looks like that bc all my hair is compacted in that puff. If I straighten it, you'll see the difference. That's why I went natural. I hated my thin relaxed hair. I thought by going natural my hair would thicken up but it didn't. It's been fine/thin my whole life. It runs on my dad's side. Everybody's hair is like that. My hair also doesn't feel coarse to the touch even though I'm a type 4. I also have virtually no tangles as a natural.

 since the texture is based on the strand size: Chaka Kun: she has full thick hair but her hair is fine: does the same strand test apply then: same for Pokahontas (LHCF) cuz she has thick beautiful hair too but its fine hair????????????????????????

Individual strand(s) = Texture = fine, medium, coarse, wiry
Amount of hairs = Density = thin, medium, thick

Bmores hair "looks" very similar to mine, I have a looser curl pattern though, but none the less it is...fine hair (soft, not wiry, no tangles) with medium density.

You can have fine hair with thick density...meaning you have a LOT of FINE hairs on a head.

Clear as mud!! LOL

I haven't seen Chaka in a while...but if my memory serves me correctly, I would say she has a medium texture with thick density.

Pokahontas his fine hair with thick density...I think.

If I'm wrong I stand corrected.

I'm going to ask the question that nobody else asked....WHY ARE YOU CONSIDERING A RELAXER!!! Your natural hair is so pretty.....

I agree with Pixel Lady! Thanks for breaking it down.

This is a good thread.

All this time, I have been thinking I have thick hair. But when I do my moms hair and after I had the pleasure of getting my hands into KhandiB's hair, I don't think my hair is that thick.

KhandiB and my mom have this kind of hair that feels so resilient, tough, and strong. My hair is VERY soft like cotton and it seems much more delicate than theirs.

I know that it is healthy though. So the only thing I can come up with is that I just have fine hair.

Okay I think this is me. Everytime I get my hair done after it is dry, I get comments that my hair is so thick. But to me it is VERY fine. I think I have fine/medium thick hair based on you description there.

My fine hair is very prone to overmoisturization which I have been experiencing a lot lately. I think I just don't need as much product as I am using.

Exactly what I was trying to say, except clearer!

Your welcome!;)

HoneyDew, less really is more! When I wear my hair down, for maintenance product, I use Fekkai Glossing Cream during the day and about a dime size of coconut or jojoba oil nightly. My hair moves like a rock star!! I love body and movement!
