bumping...

anyone have any suggestions for me. i've searched the do's and don't thread for a weave. that was helpful but are there any other suggestions? specifically if it's ok to co wash so often and how to keep my hair from being greasy after i take it out.

I don't know but when i'm in a weave I only wash and condition once a week. I moisturize every couple of days. And i do a good deep condition before the weave and after. I do lose some hair but i its just shed hair I think that has been there for the past 2 months since i while in the weave you can't comb your hair. My routine with weaves is different with wigs. With weeks i wash and deep condition 1x a week and co-wash 1x to 2x a week and moisturize everyday cause my hair is dry. With the weave i just tend to do less to my hair and leave it let be.

The only time I recommend cowashing that frequently is if you are beginning your hair journey and need a massive infusion of moisture.

The problem with co-washing that frequently under a weave is that in the event you over moisturize you really have no way of knowing because your braided hair is hidden.

Also, if your protein balance is off you could set your self up for moisture overload.

In regards to your hair loss? I don't think that is too much hair to loss based on what you described. I would go by how your hair looks on your head and not what shed.

I'm back in a weave after having let my hair rest for several months and this is what I am doing differently.

I did a Aphogee Step 2 a few days prior to give my braided hair strength.
The leave out hair IMO always suffers more than the braided hair because it is left out in the elements. I've had problems in the past with my left out hair breaking and being drier than the braided hair.

This time. I'm taking better care of my left out hair by doing oil rinse prepoos and henna gloss to the leave out only.

I don't have a problem with my hair being too greasy so I can't really comment on that.

The golfball size amount is fine taking account most of it is shed hairs. What are you using as a moisturizer? Is it water or oil based? I normally use either a conditioner mixed w/ water to spray my hair underneath my weave or use knot today mixed w/ water. Also constant co-washing will cause your hair to matte underneath the weave so I suggest either washing once a week or bi-monthly. Also seal w/ a light oil so it absorbs into your real hair and not the weave hair.

Another question...how do I know my hair has matted? I don't think I've ever had this problem. Just want to be sure I don't ever have it.
Thanks for the advice ladies. I guess I'll stick to once a week then. I'm wondering what is the worst that would happen if I only washed every 2 weeks? Will I need to up my daily moisture? My hair does get very dry.

If your hair has been in a weave for 3months then I wouldnt worry about that amount of hair. Its just all the hair you would have shed over those 3 months. And I dont think you are doing too much cowashing or moisturing, I usually do all that to my hair while im weaved up, cowashing at least 2-3/wk, moisturing(with s-curl spray) and oiling scalp whenever im not lazy which is usually every few days. I've never experienced any matting. Oh and IDK how you can tell if you're hair has begun to matt while it was still in braids under the weave, my only suggestion on that is just to make sure that you do not leave it in for too long(like over 3-4mos) and that should cut down or eliminate chances of your hair matting.

ETA: cowashing and moisturing as much as I do now in weaves has definitely made a difference in my hair, and i can tell the difference immediately at the time I take down my weave. it's now soft moist strong and i can see noticeable progress. where as before when I only cowashed once every 2-3wks in a weave, when i would take my hair down it would be dry brittle, and i swear it would look shorter then it did prior to putting in the weave.
