My hair is naturally fine with low density. I wear buns 98% of the time but I've noticed that my hair has thinned out a lot in the back, mainly in the middle. I just realized that my buns may be the reason. How do I fix this? I don't want to cut back to shoulder length. I'm going to try to find other protective styles but I'm not sure what to do about the damage that's already been done. Any suggestions?

I say let it grow out to allow the thinned area to catch up. Then cut when you are ready.

Added pics... First is wet with conditioner, second is flat ironed. Sorry for pic quality but my camera is broken.

Hi sweetie, your hair doesn't look bad at all, I say just hide it for while with some kind of protective Style. I love wigs so that's how my hair gets a break.

I dont see anything major where a cut is needed. Lay off the buns for the rest of the year & some of next....try another PS. Perhaps a wig....

It doesnt loook awful but lucky you noticed. I'd say leave it and just stop bunning for a while.

i agree with other ladies. i have a patch i had to cut due to a tangle a few months ago....it is in the center of my head, THANK GOODNESS.

since it's easily hidden, i suggest applying some castor oil to your scalp to help thicken it up some and use another protective style as the other ladies suggested. a wig is my saving grace when i want to look good, but don't feel like stressing my hair with a complicated style. i vote wig or weave. (just don't let anyone braid your hair too tight)

Don't cut!!! Just baby your hair. It's a good thing that you noticed it this soon and know what the problem is. I experienced a similar situation two years and my SHS cut my hair from APL to NL :nono:. I was so upset! I wish I had just babied my hair and cut off the thin ends as it grew out. Plus, It doesn't look that bad or really noticeable.

Your hair looks very thin to me-- and like you almost have no hair in the back. I've been there, so believe me, I'm not judging. You need to do a deep assessment of your hair and your hair care practices. If I told you otherwise, it wouldn't help. I've been posting about this lately b/c I think more women could benefit from learning info:

It sounds like you have Trichorrhexis Nodosa and I doubt your bun is causing it. See below posts for more information:

Sorry this happened to you. Similiar problem happened to me about 25 years ago. If you bun regularly, try to alternate the locations of the bun so that you're not always pulling certain sections all the time. I do high, low, middle, side, etc ponytails and/or buns to avoid this problem.

I wouldn't cut it right now. Baby that section and find a few other protective styles to help you retain length. Make sure to use ouchless ponytail holders. If you're going to bun, try the pantyhose method LOL Chicoro taught me how to do this. Instead of an elastic ponytail holder, just use a cut up pantyhose. Its just as firm and will not break your hair.

HTH! :drunk:
