So normally, if I maxiglide straight I do it on dry clean hair with no products in it, then i'll put some coconut oil or whatever on it after it's all straightened out.

Well, the other day I got called in for an audition and I had a braidout with coconut oil in it. My hair is straight in my headshots and you're supposed to show up for auditions looking as much like your headshot as possible... SO I quickly maxiglided my hair with the coconut oil already in it.
I know you shouldn't use heat on oiled hair but... OH my damn! my hair never looked straighter and more perfect!! I look like I got a perm, and I'm 9 months into a transition!

So, the question is.... how bad is it to use direct heat on oiled hair? do you think it's something that could possibly be done monthly without too much damage? or should I quit while I'm ahead and never do it again? (unless another emergency situation like this)

The only thing I would see wrong with that is the oil getting too hot. Other than that, hot coconut oil seems nice. I would like to know the answer to that question too because when I start using heat again coconut oil was my oil of choice to protect the hair.

i didn't soak a bit of this post up.... i couldn't stop staring at your lioness mane!!! beautiful beautiful hair girl!!!!

I use coconut oil to press my friends & my mother-n-law's hair all the time.

The shine is incredible.

Here's the thing...I only use my cheapo $9.99 conair flat iron to do this.

I'd never use my Chi with coconut oil. It's too hot. but it is wonderful with the lower temperature conair.

I am going to flat iron my hair this weekend for the first time in a long time. I am going to give this a try.

I also want to use the Sabino Moisture Block should I use one or the other, or do you think I can use both?

Thanks for the idea.

I say one or the other...Not Both!!!!

Coconut Oil has a higher smoke point than most other cooking oils - which is why you could probably get away with using it to flat iron hair, where as something like Jojoba or Olive Oil might retain the heat and get too hot.

I would still use a heat protectant though...

I agree... I just can't take the risk, my hair and too much heat is like a disaster waiting too happen. The best protectant I have used was CHI silk infusion.

Do you guys understand that you have just made my year!!!!! this transition is going to be easier than I thought now!!!
I thought i was truly committing a hair sin.
I kept my maxi a lil lower than I usually use it just in case, so this is going to be perfect for straightening!

i love coconut oil!!!!

Hi Whimsy,
when I press my hair I use EVCO on the very ends and edges of my hair. EVCO and Vitamin E oils are very similar to our scalp natural sebum, so it completely absorbs into the hair strands and not sit on top of the hair. (therefore no burnt up hair from hot tools)
That's my theory as to why it leaves my hair with a silky non-greasy finish. :yep:
